Reading through the posts in this thread, it seems everyone has got carried away with French music, I personally always think of the great  Jimmy Shand and Scottish dancing when I see mention of a schottische.

A quick example of what I think of as a schottische http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zxTzC64Cno

They are fundamentally the same type of tune.  This video shows a couple dancing to another Highland Schottische played in a Scots style.  The dance steps are exactly what you would do in a French/Swedish/etc version, except that the dancers are on their toes,  the continental version would be on almost flat feet, and with much smaller vertical movements.  The dancers would also tend to be much closer together  ;)   The rhythmic structure is the same.

Hi Chrisreally, that was great and I hope you send my congradutations to your daughter.
A very nice way to hear the schottische and possibly for some to understand the form better.
I know I was captured till the end.

Glad to hear you are going to try the dance Ladydetemps.  The theme throughout this thread has been in favour of learning the dance.  In my band we have always decided what music we will learn for which dance.  We may use a particular set for several different dances but then we play it differently.  Everyone in the band must know the dance.  That is they must have read and understood the dance.  We will have danced it through to the music chosen during practice to see that it fits, (fortunately we have ladies in the band, four or five hairy folk blokes dancing together doesn't bear thinking about.  errm morris?)  Besides the rhythm there are points to lift dancers, stop them, tell them the end is nigh and a new phrase will be starting.  When we work with new callers we ask for a set list and often have to explain why as so many band's attitude is "32 reel governor, certainly"  Hornpipes are possibly the easiest to get wrong and it follows that schottishe's are best matched to the particular dance.

Finally listened all the way though. Lovely performance which holds the attention all the way through.
Sounds like she's doing a bit of overtone chanting on the drone...?
