What goes well with Idbury Hill?
« on: September 21, 2010, 06:58:30 PM »

I have been learning Fieldtown Idbury Hill (I think in D dorian) and was wondering what tune(s) might go well with it?

Very nice tune, was inspired by Lester's page of really clean morris recordings.

With all due respect, I think you'll find "Idbury Hill" is a Bledington tune, all but identical to "London Pride" from Longborough. I'm not aware of a Field Town version of "Idbury Hill"; that doesn't mean there isn't one, just that if there is I haven't met it.......

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

I have written a Fieldtownesque version of Idbury Hill which has slow capers  ;D

It was the slow capers that made it especially nice.  (I had copied it off of Lester's site).

Well it would be since that's how you'd get in to or out of Bledington to the south west!

I know it's on an Old Swan Band album, but I am not that is not what you mean...  It does sound a little like Idbury Hill but I think it's not the same key/mode?

I learned it off New Esperance who use it for one of their dances -- not only sounds terrific on Oakwood and sopranino sax but also clears the wax out of your ears for free :-)

I'll ask Hilda where they got it from and if there's any notation.

They got it off MJ (Searle), but it can be found in Paul Burgess's book "The Coleford Jig" as "Old Heddon of Forley" -- try playing London Pride/Idbury Hill first in Em, then Old Heddon in A (minor-ish).

I've attached an MP3 (from a practice of a band that never made it out) for those who learn by ear...

Ah - some of the B music lifted straight out of Idbury Hill.
Thanks for info - I have a copy of Paul's book and will rummage...

Goes well with Cuckoo's Nest as Lester said and also with the tune from Bedlam Boys (a song, which has a lovely tune).
