Poll: Tune of the Month for October 2010
« on: September 23, 2010, 11:16:38 PM »

Here we go again folks; voting time again! Pick your tune (less to choose from this time; changing the format of the poll slightly).

You're running out of time for your Liberty Bell submission folks - as a chap I used to work with used to say, and this is probably the only piece of useful advice he gave me,  "The perfect is the enemy of the good!" - if you're waiting to get it perfect, you'll be waiting a *long* time!  ;D Let's see where you've got to now, warts and all!

Cheers,

Clive

Just in case you haven't heard it before, here's a beautiful version of Canal in October (French title: Le Canal en Octobre), played on Chromatic button accordion:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qt-ohf6jUo

The tune's a modern composition, written by Frederic Paris of La Chavanee.

As I can't really enter it when CiO wins here is another version recorded at a chums party:

How true, and how often I've succumbed to that... I only posted my "Liberty Bell" because of a combination of:
- making myself a hostage to fortune by talking about what I would do,
- goading generally from various others,
- the postings of other people's efforts which gave me some ideas and inspiration (thank you Sandy and Ukebert especially)

If you ignore the little lead in notes the only real difference between A and B parts is changing that long note from a B to a D - yet they sound quite different. Remarkable! :|glug

Well, sadly I have to confess I'm somewhat underwhelmed by what seems to me a very ordinary tune. Now I'm quite prepared to concede that that's my problem, and I'm missing something that everyone else can see, but I'm afraid it does absolutely nothing for me.......

As I'm away on a narrow boat on the Leeds-Liverpool next week I think it's highly appropriate  (:)

However, if you find it boring it's a great tune to decorate, double stop or otherwise play around with.  I'm playing around with it as a slow air (misty mornings et al) and it's good fun.

I'm not massively fond of Canal in October either I have to admit. I think that Old Joe Clark would be a good one, as it is an easy tune but one that you can do a lot with. I'm looking forward to Sandy's version if it wins (:)

I'm a Canal in October fan myself. I think all of the listed tunes are good contenders - if you hear them regularly in sessions, that tends to mean they're relatively easy to pick up and are good enough tunes to make you want to learn them/play again.

The challenge for me is to find a different way of approaching it to how I would normally play it - in Canal's case, I can think of 2 different approaches (and no, neither of them involve changing time signatures), and I also love the feel Dominique Riviere achieves in his CBA video (linked earlier in this thread) - quite different to how I've ever heard it played in the UK.

It's a good flexible tune... vote canal!

I actually find Dominique's style rather slushy - it's lost the Schottiche 'skip' that both Frederic Paris and Andy Cutting achieved.   There's a CBA player who used to turn up at Embraud every summer  (I was last there in 03) who played it every year ... as a sort of bossanova  ??? He didn't win the annual competition either!

So as ever, it's what you do with it. I need to input the 'Autrefois' tune Fred starts off with (totally from memory as the 1994 cassette tape is long defunct). Still no reply from Fred yet re 'permission' - we live in hope.
