Aussie Accordion Man
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:37:09 AM »

Nice little story here

"Accordion Man" - Japanese POW

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/09/24/3020821.htm?section=justin

I think we should lobby to have him renamed "melodeon man".

It seems a strange assumption that the guy had the box hidden away whilst captive.  I mean, if he played it after dark the neighbours would have complained!  Presumably the liberating forces (and photographers, etc) gave it to him?

It doesn't look battered in that photo.

MMM

I,too, will join the campaign to rename him the  " Mystery Melodeon Man"

But, we must take into consideration that this may have been a purposely unidentified group on a secret mission with
a new and deadly weapon....don't want to divulge any military secrets.

Can you imagine a company of melodeonists, creeping in stealth upon enemy encampments. Then, on the command of
"Fire" ; squeezing the hell out of their bellows blowing the opposing force to bits.
What a fiendish and diatonic plan. Cross row ther little butts back to microtonal hell.

This is stuff on par with Bridge on the River Kwai.

Whatever the outcome    ... the man in the uniform ,with his bellows hung high,  deserves the
MELODEON MEDAL of HOHNOR.

Hip hip Hurrah !!!  Hip Hip Hurrah !!!   Hip Hip Hurrah !!!

and a twenty one button salute  !!!!!!!

Just a point of pedantry, or perhaps anti-pedantry....

In Oz, the term "melodeon" is seldom used except by Morris musicians and subscribers to this forum, and I suspect that the subject of the photo is neither. I think that would also likely apply to any one who might be able to identify him.

"Button accordion", or just "accordion", makes far more sense in the context in which the photo was taken, and also in the writing of the news article and the research being undertaken by the AWM.

Not that this helps in identifying him....     :(

Incidentally Theo, is your photo of actor Richard Wattis? Not known for his melodeon playing afaik....    ???

His happiness probably says a lot about the power of a liberating army.

Lets face it, for all we know he's smiling cos he's just nicked it off a fleeing, morris-dancing loving Japanese guard.
