Would it be possible to allow attachments with .doc extensions to be added to the permissible list?
I normally send copies of tunes to friends using this extension and they only are in the region of 50Kb in size, well within the 250Kb limit. It would help those who haven't learned ABC or not found a good conversion route.

.doc is the MS word format which you may only use to create small files, but it is very easy for them to become very large indeed if they contain images or other non text info.   If you are using Word then I recommend that for files you want to post to the forum you convert them to RTF format, which is a standard option available within Word.

I tried that route. What I got was a DOC file of 45 Kb and an RTF file of 2 Mb for the same page.
I can insert a large picture file in to a Word document and get the small file size.
 If members can keep their picture file size small, will they not do the same for other attachments?

Theo - tried to load a 78Kb .doc file and got:-

Aviemore-Lucky 7.doc.
You cannot upload that type of file.
The only allowed extensions are gif,jpg,mpg,pdf,png,mp3,nwc,txt.doc.

Wish I was good at computers!! Then I wouldn't have to cry on your shoulder.

I think there's a syntax error (not the dreaded syntax error) in the list of allowed extensions, a dot instead of a comma between 'txt' and 'doc'. It won't allow text documents either for the same reason:

poncho.txt.

At the risk of making more work for our gaalant administrators, might I suggest that the ability to add .docx files would also be very valuable. The .doc files are for Word 1997 to 2003, but there must be many of us that are using Word 2007 or 2010, which use .docx files.

It is true that there is a facility in the more recent incarnations of Word to save files to the earlier format, but this can require quite a bit of reformatting when diagrams are involved, as I just discovered when trying to post a keyboard diagram onto the 'melodeon makers course' thread. As time goes on, more and more people will update their computers or software, so the number of peope facing this problem will increase.

There are advantages in saving in the older .doc format for people who do not use the latest (or any) Microsoft software.  The .doc format has become a useful format that can also be used by other types of software,  so for the benefit of the widest range of members I would prefer if we could stick with that.

Fair enough. I'll just have to write anything I want to post in the older format (if I remember) or convert from .docx and reformat before posting.

Microsoft Word, on a PC or Mac, can save a copy of any document in PDF.  PDF readers are more widespread (Adobe reader is free) than .doc or .docx readers.  So a PDF version might have better distribution than a doc(x) version.

You can already attach .pdf files, which are great for simply sharing a document, but not generally suitable for the example here where some members might want to edit the file.

I'm using OpenOffice on linux, and although it can open doc(x) I usually don't even bother. The windows documents usually don't look the way they should. OpenOffice can export to pdf and it's free (also for windows). For windows there's also plenty of free pdf-writers which let you print to pdf from within any print-capable program.
