Many years back, I went to a week-long juggling festival hosted in Tbilisi's circus building.  Whilst there, I stayed with local non-circus hosts, who also took me to see various local sights and events.  One evening, I was taken to a Georgian dinner party, with maybe 10-15 or so guests.  After the food, all of those present (except, obviously, for me) started singing traditional Georgian songs.  I think it was one of the most amazing and unexpected things I've ever heard.  Even though, to them, it was just unaccompanied social singing, the harmonies and sound were like nothing I'd heard before.  It's one of those musical experiences that I'll never forget.

Also, there were military 'issues' back then too.  There were days when we were told it wasn't OK to venture out into the city, because "there were lots of tanks out today".   :o

As does Show of Hands! Should I go and see a doctor? ???

I can never get my head around that 'with Miranda Sykes' thing. Is she in the band, or isn't she?

Yes, and no. She is now an integral part of the band, and I can't see them touring without her, but it apparantly makes more financial sense for her not to be a 'member' of the band.

Saw them at Buckingham Parish Church last night - a lovely concert, and very interesting the way they chose their set list, and indeed how they played it, around the acoustic of the church they were playing in; more of the slower, delicate stuff, less of the faster crowd pleasers that work well in festival/theatre environments, and one or two of the crowd pleasers rearranged into a slower, more thoughtful arrangement to suit the mood. A few unamplified songs just using the acoustics of the church. Very well thought out and executed; a reminder of how to let the environment you're playing in influence what you play and how.

yes, some great harmony and of course daily church singing is pretty good - if I have time and energy I might dig out some  recordings from the old archive......... აქ არის იმ იმედით!
(Not KGB recordings... they used to have mics running up one side of the hotel at the end of the main drag in rooms immediately above each other and we used to sing to them!)

One evening, I was taken to a Georgian dinner party, with maybe 10-15 or so guests.  After the food, all of those present (except, obviously, for me) started singing traditional Georgian songs.

Did the "Tamada" (toastmaster)  do the traditional seven toasts?
  • "Peace". After the Tamada drinks his wine, each participant stands to toast “peace” as well
  • "Our hostess" - thanking her for the warm welcome and complimenting her efforts.  Again, all stand and drink a toast in her honour.  After this the hostess must pick up her own khantsi and propose a toast to her guests.
  • "The country" wishing prosperity, bright future and the defeat of its enemies (doesn’t work against Russians)! Participants will then often strike up in polyphonic song in praise of Georgia!
  • "To all mothers" (not the American variety)!
  • "To all that have passed away". Our hostess brings a dish with bread and salt. While one  is usually expected to drain a khantsi completely,  now the Tamada leaves wine in his khantsi in honour of their memory ...  and pours this onto the bread
  • "To life"
  • “To love" and its importance in everyday life.  Georgian males are infamously macho!

My other reason to visit Georgia was to try their wines. Georgians claim to have 'invented wine' and it remains very big in their culture. Here are the notes  I did for a tasting at my wine club. Has some nice pics of students partying outside Gori.

I'd forgotten about that, but now you mention it, yes, I think they did.  I'm not sure that I ever understood the details of all of it, but there was certainly a lot of toasting going on, both at the event I mentioned and in general.

The wine, too, I'd almost forgotten.  Yes, it was very special and seemed to be drunk as a matter of course in pretty much any situation.  Also, now I think about it, it was probably the reason that I spent almost my entire time there feeling unwell :(

Ahh, yes the Spiers and Beams tour. I saw them at Ely Cathedral last year (one of my gigs of the year), and will be seeing them in Peterborough Cathedral in November. Can't wait!  (:)

Write them a letter of complaint about extortionate interest charges and advising them to cancel the charges immediately and to reply to your complaint within the regulatory period.

I've just ordered some reeds and they've charged me 20% VAT on the €42 postage....naughty, naughty.

...and tomorrow Natwest, (I really don't know why I'm still with them, they're rubbish), is going to charge me well above the actual cost for the transfer. Bloody banks.

Ever since I've banked with Nationwide, I can't imagine why everybody else doesn't. I suppose they just don't know.

- Transfers to anyone else's bank account are quick and free. (You know that Andy, you've seen it done!)
- Online interest-paying e-saver linked to current account - transfer money either way instantly for nothing.
- Transaction history online goes back far enough to check anything in the previous tax year.
- "No-paper" statements option means I don't get statements in the post, but I can still download a PDF facsimile of the printed statement if I need one.
- My VISA card is an all purpose bank debit card (I don't want a credit card), cash card and cheque guarantee card (not that I write many cheques these days).
- My money doesn't get paid out in dividends to any b**** shareholders...

The only thing they can't do is run a business account, but I don't need one of those.

Royal Bank of Scotland blocked my cash card for my having the sheer temerity to try to use it in a hole in the wall in Georgia. Then the same happened to my RBS credit card. Next stop was Istambul and I got there on a wing, a prayer and one remaining non RBS card which fortunately worked (tho I was robbed blind on charges to draw cash).

Guess Anahata is more of a Brit than me - but a spare (generally 'credit') card is a must when abroad. It protects you against the banks' seemingly irresistible urge to "protect you"  :-\

Funny how few posts there are on a saturday compared with a weekday.   I think most people only post here when they get bored at work!
