Ever since I've banked with Nationwide, I can't imagine why everybody else doesn't. I suppose they just don't know.

- Transfers to anyone else's bank account are quick and free. (You know that Andy, you've seen it done!)
- Online interest-paying e-saver linked to current account - transfer money either way instantly for nothing.
- Transaction history online goes back far enough to check anything in the previous tax year.
- "No-paper" statements option means I don't get statements in the post, but I can still download a PDF facsimile of the printed statement if I need one.
- My VISA card is an all purpose bank debit card (I don't want a credit card), cash card and cheque guarantee card (not that I write many cheques these days).
- My money doesn't get paid out in dividends to any b**** shareholders...

The only thing they can't do is run a business account, but I don't need one of those.

Ah, but is there a way to convince them to not charge you lots and lots to transfer money abroad? The thing that drew me to them is the whole free withdrawal abroad thing, which they have now stopped, to be replaced with an insurance service that is a far worse deal for me :(

I can't stand Natwest, their in-branch service is bad, they keep changing the numbers to contact them, their online banking is always down and you can't phone them without being passed around several different people and being put on to others who want you to answer questionaires or apply for a loan or credit card. I only opened that account when I was working for my Dad and it was easier for him to pay my salary into another Natwest account than the Nationwide one I've had since I was 12. Fortunately, I kept that ticking over because until this summer my Natwest account came with a Maestro card which isn't accepted in America so I needed the Visa from Nationwide and I don't work for my Dad anymore so I think I'll give Natwest the elbow.

If we really do live in a globalised society and if London truly is the world's financial centre then why do British high street banks still act like it's 1950 when you want to make payments abroad?. I needed to send a payment for the reeds I ordered in Euros and Natwest won't let me do that online or even over the phone, I had to go into the branch on Friday to make an appointment for someone to do it earlier today, (which was in no way massively inconvenient for me or ridiculous to even have to do in first place considering it took all of 3 minutes), and was charged £10...which I suppose is better than the £20 charge they've stuck me with every time I've had to make Swedish Kronor payments. Seeing as I already do a lot of business in Europe and will be doing a lot more in the future I'm seriously considering opening a current account in Ireland so I can hold funds in Euros and make free online transfers in the Eurozone. I was surprised to find out you can actually do that even if you're not resident in Ireland, all you have to do is provide adequate proof of your identity and go to an Irish branch in person to open the account.

Try xe.com for foreign transfers.  It's a bit of work to set up an account, but you can check rates before you commit to a transfer and no extra fee.

I use the Co-op Bank and Smile (also the Co-op) and wouldn't move anywhere else ... well Nationwide is still a Building Society (and was once upon a time the Co-operative Building Society).

Here's to the Co-operative movement and the bank that didn't need or ask for a bung from the government  8)

I had a Co-op credit card once. I found them very worthy but spectacularly incompetent.
Yes, Nationwide is a building society but a flex account is indistinguishable from a bank other current a/c except that everything works nicely. I've also found the local branch staff helpful when needed.

xe.com look interesting. Until now I've used Paypal for international transfers. They don't have  a spotless reputation but I suspect that's tied in with the activities of eBay sharks and similar lowlife.
For online sales in the UK nochex.co.uk are good and cheaper than Paypal.

Hmm, and I thought XE was just a currency conversion site, I shall have to look into that.

My new cuckoo clock sounds just fine! It plays The Happy Wanderer and Edelweiss. Just thought you'd all like to know.  :-*

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

did you copy concertina layout and put the bird buttons near the air button or on the LH?  >:E

Yes, you'd certainly need some kind of "quim barrier" if you're going to play like that.
