Is Danish this incomprehensible?
« on: May 01, 2008, 05:51:50 PM »

Not melodeon related but I got such a huge laugh out of these two clips that I have to post themI hope that our Scandinavians(the real ones) will comment.

This is an Anglo friendly clip as the 'Danes' speak in english to the camera(for obvious reasons).

Warning some cursing

Clip #1 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s-mOy8VUEBk

Clip#2 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eng5rJm9X7w&feature=related

(note to moderators,if this post is not appropriate I don't mind if it's taken down)

Very funny! The Danes have a sharp sense of humour... Love it! Somehow Monthy Python-esque.

We'll have to see if these were actually Danes,I think they might have in fact been Norwegians!

If you tell a Dane that Danish is a beautiul language you get two reactions, "Really?Oh...thank you?" or "What!Oh come on,no it's not!"

That disco clip was hilarious. When was it made,1989?  ;D
I love that there was a demand for a Norwegian version.

Viljo,It's interesting that though you can understand some Swedish, the Skane dialect remains incomprehensible,in my Swedish detective novels the Stockholmers had the same problem when they went to Malmo.

I'm Danish.  And no, that television clip is norwegian.

But we really have a crazy language. I'm studying English at the University of Copenhagen, and one of my professors (born and bread in England) said that she actually thought danes were always discontent, or even ANGRY at each other, due to the strange sounds and single-octave range of our speech.

Don't ever try to learn it. You'll go crazy. Stick with new instruments rather than new languages.

Stupid question I always wanted to ask: :)
Are the "danish" pastries (those round-shaped buns coming with many sorts of toppings or icings) really danish?

Well, some years ago I spent a week touring around Denmark in a hire car.  Always ask ahead which day is early closing.  Plan your arrival in a small town for ten minutes before the baker closes.  The Danish pastry is made about a metre long and cut to size as required.  You can get an excellent price per metre when the shop is about to close!

Being small, rotund and blond with a beard I could blend into the background by carrying a bottle of beer in my hand until anyone spoke to me, when they suddenly assumed I was German.  Rush hour happens around 4:00pm on Friday and lasts for ten minutes.  Then the boats rush out of harbour and the streets are deserted.  Perhaps they'd heard my playing?

I was once sitting at a breakfast table in the US with some Swedish friends.  We agreed that French toast has no connection with France and any link between "English Muffins" and England is very tenuous -- but Swedish meatballs do actually come from Sweden.  The next time we have the conversation, I'll bring up "Danish pastry".

"Love Me Tender". Yeah, well, what can I say? There will always be those who will go to great lengths to "legitimze" the accordion!

And thank you, Lars, for the links to the Danish melodeon tunes. Very nice! I will listen to them many more times and try to learn a few, but I've got a long way to go!

Lars,
Thanks for the link.  The tune Labri is one I recognize from the playing of Carl Erik Lundgaard Jensen, but he plays it with something called the Oxbol Polka, and it only seems to have an "A" part in his version.  It's a great tune, and I'm happy to have a "B" part for it now.  Any backgound you'd care to share?

Thanks Lars, great tunes.
I love that Egoschottish. Dare I say it sounds almost East Anglian, particularly the A part which is similar to George Craske's Sustead Schottische (Before the Night Was Out - page 67).

I'd like to start playing them as a set if that's OK with you.  8)
