Played wearing a hat, on the Hohner Corso G/C that I bought a couple of weeks ago for the meagre sum of £75 !!

Cheers  :|glug
Did the hat come with the corso then or did it cost extra? ;)

Hat is worn mostly on the golf corso

Put it on for Sandy.

I have discovered that a favourite hardanger fiddle tune of mine is reasonably possible on the BCC#. You don't get the fabulously rich interweaving harmonies, but it is still nice. Challenge is to learn it well enough to record by the end of the month!

I love learning a new instrument. I find the "easy" TOTMs much more difficult, because I feel that I should be doing something interesting with a tune that I can already play or find relatively straightforward. It is so refreshing to think "Hooray, easy tune that I might be able to stagger through!" :P

Right, here we go - my Scandinavian tune, freshly learned this month:

Markku Lepistö's 'Silta'

Markku Lepistö, if you haven't heard of him before, is an astonishingly good melodeon player from Finland, probably best known for his membership of Värttinä, but has released a couple of solo albums that are the some of the best melodeon music I've ever heard. Ever. You can hear his music on Spotify, and get his CD's from Amazon. Go fetch and be amazed.

Anyway, this piece is the title track from his first album, Silta ('Bridge' in English). It took me a long time, and many, many listenings, before I realised that this was a solo melodeon piece. No other instruments on it at all. It sounded so orchestral, and I was so tied up in the music, that it never occurred to me that it was a solo. In fact, if you look on youtube for Lepisto and Silta, you'll find a wonderful video of him playing it live, solo. So, if he can play it solo, so can I, right? How hard can it be?

Well... I've found it hard. Very, very, hard. But it's taught me a lot in the process! It's basically a 3 part tune, split down into (roughly) the following sequence. Ax2; Bx2; Ax1; Bx1; C; Ax2 (alternative chords); Bx2; C - not that I think I play that!

I found the C music the hardest - it was just impossible to get it in the head - and I've had to take a couple of liberties with the tune to fit it on my box, and to keep me sane. This is probably the only tune I've ever met that needs an E minor on the push. Lots of boxes out there have that chord, but not mine! So I've had to lower a phrase of the music an octave to make it playable on the pull instead.

In case you're wondering, the alternative chord sequence used in the A music is G - F# - Em - D etc, *but* the F# is the F# note against a D chord. I'm not quite sure what that chord is... D major, I suppose, but maybe there's a technical name for it if F# is the root note?

Finally, believe it or not, this actually plays fine on a standard 2 row 8 bass. No unisonorics necessary... in fact, they don't help at all. You can't do the G - F# - Em - D run (so just the standard A music chords), and you have to play that phrase in the C music an octave down so you can play Em on the pull, but other than that, it's perfectly playable. I've been playing this on my Preciosa a lot, but I brought out the Mory for the recording so I could get that F# chord in.

Enough rambling... enjoy!

Woah, that was a great thing to have had a go at, Clive.  I loved the original album version, too, but wouldn't have thought of actually trying it.  So, respect for not only giving it a go, but pulling it off with such finesse.  Excellent.

I agree well played Clive.

But why have you been banished to the wet room or cellar of the house ?

Music like that is for the living room.

Wow. Part of that really reminds me of a tune on the latest Andy Cutting CD and you certainly have the playing style. See one can have melodeon and sensitivity. Or should I say you make the melodeon sound like a musical instrument  ::). Yes 'wow' again and thank-you.

Cheers

Thanks for the comments folks!   (:) A few days into trying to learn this, it was still looking impossible to learn, but a couple of days ago I got my head around it, and voila. I thought I'd record it before I forgot how to play it! Recording helps me cement tunes in my head, so hopefully this can become part of my repertoire.

Cheers,

Clive

I just commented on Clive's Youtube vid page that he makes it breathe.

That's what I've been trying to do with this one. Samlingsmarsch, or Gathering March, is the first track on Nyckelharpa's Byss-Calle album. I love this group. The tune taught me switching push and pull left hand A chords in places that felt unnatural to me.

Chris,

Thanks. Your "listenable" comment surprised me. I had a very tough time making my playing listenable at the pace I needed to play to achieve any kind of evenness. When I listen to this video, I think my playing sounds very dead. I think other tunes I play slowly sound slow, but not dead. :) I posted this video because at least my playing is easy to follow. I may try to record at a faster tempo, maybe even the tempo of the original recording I pulled the melody from. You've encouraged me.

I had a funny thought after watching myself play this one. I could sell my playing to the CIA as a torture device, yet I look like I know what I am doing and am really enjoying myself. I thought, "I seem so confident in the video, I hope no one out there gets the impression that I think my playing is good!"

Great job, Ukebert! Halling is a cool tune type. It really sounded Bäsk-ish so I wasn't surprised when I saw the original ;D

Nice playing, and a hard tune indeed.

Nice to see the Casali in the frame! (:)
