Great job, Ukebert! Halling is a cool tune type. It really sounded Bäsk-ish so I wasn't surprised when I saw the original ;D

I had never heard of Bäsk before, or the Halling tune type. Really really cool tune though. If I play it in a reverberant room then coming in with the bass sounds amazing. If I can polish it up a bit it'll make a lovely party piece.

Nice playing, and a hard tune indeed.

Nice to see the Casali in the frame! (:)

Indeed ;D To encourage me to record on that as well! I have a lovely Norwegian tune in B that I want to play on it, but I haven't quite got it yet.

Difficult tune, take 10 or something, "it'll do" ;D

Lovely tune though...

Well you have to develop a taste for that stuff. Something I never did whilst living in Norway for 34 years. Found the Hardanger  (Hard anger) Fiddle Music like many Norwegians do. Too hard to listen too for any length of time. Well played I guess. I've seen and heard "Bäsk" too and didn't like them either. Must be me. 'cos thousands do. :|bl

Well done.

The entire time I lived on the TX/MX border, I never acquired a taste for Norteno, Ranchero, TEX-MEX, Cumbia, etc. I heard it everywhere and loved attending the mananitas where it was played, but... On the other hand, upon being introduced to various Nordic trad through the NorthSide label, I was hooked immediately. When I'm in the mood to listen to something fast, I like Vasen, Varttina, Bask, Tapini Varis on jaw harp, Olav Johansson, Hedningarna, and intimidating as her music is, Maria Kalaniemi. the NorthSide label has a series of compilation samplers at reasonable cost. http://www.noside.com/

Yeah Väsen. Jonas Simonson plays with them too.
Väsen and a lot of others groups  are good, but different again to Bäsk

I don't like Bäsk a lot either, but they've done a few very very nice tunes, I remember a slängpolska that is simply awesome, and this and some other halling. A guy who always teaches at the Vara workshop weekend plays the fiddle with them. As for Väsen, they are talented but I get an overdose of nyckelharpa...

I currently live in KY, so I get an overdose of swing. I've never liked it, but being a beginner, maybe if I try it I would learn something. I like Väsen's version of 30 yr Jig. To me the way they make it so dynamic is deceptively simple. I've been working on a right hand for that tune since I first picked up my C#D, but I can't get a lilt out of my washing machine playing style. :)

Another try at this Theme.....I seem to gravitate to these tunes. I have been enjoying and admiring the selections posted this month. This one's a composition from Nyckelharpist Olov Johansson, who has been mentioned on this thread. He has kindly granted me permission to use it here. It's called Toker (the Happy Gnome). I figured it to be a good one to learn for the ThotM.
As I was practicing this song, my stringed instruments were watching sadly from a dusty corner, so I decided to get them into the fray. I also have not been able to achieve decent sound quality as of late on Youtube, so I posted it on Onmvoice as well:

Thanks Lester. Our group play that in Dm and I'm reduced to comp on guitar, But I played along with you in Em now on the box. And changed rows for the second part. That was good.  :|glug

Of course I got so excited that I forgot to listen to the second tune. :|bl

Hammered dulcimer too, yea! Minor, yea! I heard the dulcimer do quadruplets with the melodeon, cool.

Your postings are quite educational for me as you use techniques and devices that I would never have thought of. Thanks Ian...!

Super job, Lester and TSMB. You two definitely have a great combination with the box and dulcimer, and the tunes that work well with it. Delightful listening!

Thanks JWF, though I think my own type of playing is really the norm in Scotland.

Getting into playing the box, I tried a little 3/4 tune called "Soptippen" and "Schottis från Grästorp" -- and had to sit way back from the mike to try and keep it from clipping. Darned honking Hohner basses.. still haven't mastered the whole webcam thing.  :||: :||: :||:

Very nice!! My hubby plays Soptippen. Schottis från Grästorp was one of the session tunes at the workshop weekend in Vara the first year I was there. I remember playing it on the fiddle.

Nigel,
'B' is the only key I can get any basses on the Double Ray, normally I'd play it in 'D' [more fiddle friendly!]

How neat to see someone here play the B/C. My husband is learning that, and says that typical Swedish melodeon tunes are very difficult with that tuning. He plays mostly Irish music with it.

Here's my contributions to the Theme of the month. I decided to stand up this time so there's no need to worry about looking pretty... :D

A nice mazurka from Sunne in the south of Värmland, the first tune I learned on the melodeon:

And Reinländer efter Öje, from Norway.

Here's my contribution for this one (albeit with a couple of mistakes):
totur
I'm still somewhat new to learning the melodeon (<7 months with a playable box, although a while before that with an old battered box leakier than the Titanic, with half the keys stuck), so any feedback will be gratefully received.

The tune is an unnamed totur in A from the book Gamle Himmerlands Danse (Old Himmerland Dances), which I found in a second hand book shop a while back. Himmerland is the region of Denmark in the north-east of Jutland, around the Aalborg area.

The way that I'm playing the tune doesn't sound quite right for the dance, compared to the (few) videos I've found of Danish toturs, although most of them also appear to be using the same tune, which is a different tune 'totur fra Vejle' (Totur from Vejle). There's a video of that totur being danced here. It differs a bit from what's in the book in that the book only calls for two couples, although the steps look similar overall. I'm guessing that it is a case of regional variation, as Vejle is a bit further south.
I can probably do a translation of the steps in the book if anyone is interested (I'm pretty sure that would constitute fair use, although correct me if I'm wrong).

According to the book, the dance is also commonly danced with another dance, called a tretur, which is a dance for three couples. As far as videos of that go, I've only found Norwegian ones so far though.

Med venlige hilsner til alle,
-Anders
