Sounds like you are sailing through it now. I hope we are going to see a video or hear a soundclip when it's done.

Martyn

Yes I can do that although I'm not a great player. Oddly enough I had a quick play yesterday with three voices on the C row and just one on the F row (amazing what a slip of paper under an unwanted reed block can do) and suddenly realised that the Club basses might be a bit of an obstacle. I thought I never used the lower two buttons nearest the bellows on the push (the ones that would be C in both directions on a D/G box) but now realise that I just might, now and again. This would mean my choice of tune to play might be pretty limited! ::)

The F row tuning is now finished so I have a fully functioning, playable two row. The hard thing now will to be to stop playing it long enough to tune the accidental row! I'm really surprised but it's obvious that I'm going to have to limit the travel of the treble keys, I thought that was a feature of the lower end Hohner models which this one obviously isn't. So with the row of seven to tune up, key travel to limit and another one or two minor jobs to do before it's allowed out in public (like adjusting a fixed bass end strap that cuts off the circulation to the left hand!) it will be a week or more before any recordings/videos will appear, if not a little longer ...  :|glug

That's it then all done and dusted, fine tuning done, the treble action levelled and travel limited and I'm very pleased indeed with the results.

I'll try and put a video up sometime over the next week.

Two disappointingly brief sound files - I really must get to grips with my 'performance issues'. First up is the Club 111 C/F which has suddenly become very 'breathy' - I think I have a few gasket/pallet leaks to deal with now.  ::)

Club C/F

Spurred on by my (perceived) success with this box I dragged out the original 'Old Hohner' box from this thread and spent a few more hours sorting out the remaining issues as best I could. Poor old lass I've treated her dreadfully but I think there's a year or two left in her yet. I normally play this across the rows but on a B/C box it's not an option so this is all on the C row and it sounds a lot wetter than I ever intended but I quite like it!  :||:

Refurbishing an Old Hohner C/C# to B/C

Time to congratulate myself on a job half done methinks  :|glug - oh, and yes, I do realise that I have to go over both boxes and pay a bit more attention to both the main tuning and the tremolo.  :|bl

The old Club box is now out on loan to a morris dancing friend who is eager to add musical morbidity to his list of talents now that he's 69 and his two left feet keep colliding!  >:E

Bump! I'm sorry but I think there is so much accumulated knowledge in this one thread that it deserves to be dredged up from time to time!

*BUMP*

Back to the top again as a question has been raised in a new thread about this old thread by 911377brian. Rather than clutter up that thread we'll continue here.

Just been following up your old post Pete. What paper did you use to re-cover the bellows?

It was a bookbinder's paper from a company called Shepherd's if I remember correctly, it had a textured finish rather like snakeskin. It's now deleted from the stock list I'm afraid but it is rather pretty and remains so to this day. The sound of the box is another matter though!  ::)

Thanks Pete.I'm experimenting with various types of paper at the moment; plenty of time for that as removing the old stuff is taking forever. Did you make a pattern for cutting or did you make each piece individually? :Ph

I used a rotary cutter in the Art Dept of the school where I work to quickly and accurately strip up the papers to the correct width, each strip was long enough for a long side and a short side. The vee cuts at the end were done with a scalpel on a cutting mat, all quick and easy.

No problem Malcolm!

For those wondering what a rotary cutter is, there's one here. The second picture gives a better idea how it's used.

Thanks, I was deeply embarrassed when I realised that I had unintentionally hijacked someone's thread Pete. I'm sure I can borrow a rotary cutter....

No panic if you can't; I did my 2-row Koch entirely with a scalpel and steel rule.  OK, a rotary trimmer is probably faster, but doing it by hand is at least as accurate - and somehow more satisfying!

Agreed. I only used the rotary cutter for the long cuts, all of the angled cuts were made with a craft knife and steel rule against the markings on a cutting mat.

This post is also meant as a *bump* for a useful thread!
