This month, how about playing us something typical of a session you play at? Or if you don't have any sessions near you, or don't get the chance to get out to them, how about something from or linked to the area you live in?

Lots of scope for variety in this theme, and no doubt we'll hear lots interesting tales behind the music too! So as ever, have fun, and looking forward to seeing the entries!

Excellent theme! I really must record something for this, though I strongly suspect Anahata and I probably have the same tune set in mind.  :P

Seems like I'm quick of the mark this time. This tune is very popular at our local session in Adderbury and not one of the fast tempo variety.
Learnt from the playing of Paul Scourfield.

Well, it's not hard to think of several...
This theme should be popular, as almost by definition it won't need learning or practice.

aww thank you Derek. It was nice for a change to play a tune that I'm familiar with. Pleased it didn't come out too jittery after a double expresso at lunchtime. :Ph

Read the question right through!  (:)

Er ......oddly enough, no! ;D

Richard the Lionheart is reputed to have married Berengaria in Limassol, but that doesn't suggest any tunes either.

That's where you're wrong :P Very fast Irish reels in A are popular in my session. I can get through them, but nowhere near good enough to record solo... I'll have to think of something else.

Oops, I actually missed that one! Could be interesting. The only tune I know from this area is a peculiar polska from Vänersnäs. It should be possible to play on a D/G box though...

... and here's an early theme entry from me too!

I'm stretching the definition of 'local' here a little; this is a popular tune about 50 miles due south of where I live, at the George Inn session, near London Bridge station (1st monday of the month, unless there's a bank holiday, in which case it's the 2nd). I used to go there a lot when I worked in London, but these days it's just that bit too far to reach regularly, especially now I'm a family man! But I managed to get down there yesterday, so I think it's fair game!

Here we have Alan Day's (he of concertina.net) reworking of Andy Cutting's 'Spaghetti Panic' - which Andy wrote as a kind of 7/8 thing (bits of 4/4 too) and played with Blowzabella. Fantastic tune, and fiendishly difficult to play... although like many of Andy's compositions then, completely playable on a standard 21/8 pokerwork if you're, well, ... Andy. Alan heard it, liked it, but thought it had a few too many notes. So he stripped a few out, and then a few more, simplified it a bit further, and came up with this...

A 32 bar jig version of Spaghetti Panic (whoops, url fixed)

Genius, really. A lovely example of how reworking a piece of music can produce something completely unexpected. The fact it's rather easier to play than the original also influences my opinion of it too. It dropped into GIG CB's repertoire after he played it at a gig sound check and everyone locked onto it, and hence became a favourite at the George session too. GIG CB tend to use it in dances for the Champenoise, by the way - a French couple dance similar in style to the Gay Gordons.

Played on my Hohner Preciosa (still an 8 bass for the time being, but not for long I think) in Bb/Eb, which puts this version in C minor. Down the George Inn session, it's normally played on a D/G, in E minor. And it has power chords and a descant line, but that's another story.

Enjoy,

Clive

Love it Clive. If your box was in D/G I might be able to work out what you were doing with your basses, sadly my ear gets confused with the change of key.

I was thinking the other day about what to record for this theme....I've got 3 sessions I go to well... ones split into two (beginners and full speed) so I'm counting them as separate.  All the session favorites are tunes I don't like...weird huh?

Oooh Nice Clive.

Now Emanuell Pariselle put Bb/Eb on my (his) two and half row ( although the rest is in G/C ) that we made last year in Belgium. Along with 14 !! bass buttons. :|bl  Now Ill have a look and see what I can get out of them.
