I rather like it. It has a definite chugging feeling to it. Perhaps a bit too slow for dancing, but a good, solid, comforting feel to it.  ;)

Here is a link to my first attempt of tune of month and first tune ever posted on-line.
There is only one a and b part so is very short.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypvXDTzOttY

Any comments appreciated since I am truly a beginner (except for -" Your boat sunk ! start swimming " :D)
This was recorded with Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 (in HD mode) and separate archos stereo mic.

Thanks for starting this tune of the month. It does help you focus on learning a tune.

thanks;

That's a great first attempt, Don.  It's a good idea to post one A and one B to start with.  What a lovely melodeon!

I know just how you feel, as I posted my first ever attempt last month and I am a beginner too.  This forum is fantastic for encouragement etc.  So much so that I posted my second attempt for the tune of the month this month.

I agree that the tune of the month idea is brilliant.  It gives you a purpose for learning a tune and sticking at it.

Keep it it up, Don.  (:)

Cheers
Pam

Well done for your first try and no mistakes. :)
Even now I find some tunes take effort for me just to reach three times through.

Don, I think you are doing great! Will you be recording the b part as well?

Susi  ,  Pam  , ladydetemps
Thanks for kind comments. I have checked out all your recordings of this tune and really enjoy them all.
I am striving to also play with such seemingly effortless free flowing style ! with hornpipe feel and bass variations.
I am working on a full version with part repeats as well.

I am newly subscribed to melodeon.net, these are quick and dirty sketches of Steamboat Hornpipe, hopefully within the terms of the forum but if not please have patience. Only a couple of days left in the month anyway!

Hello Bill and welcome to melnet.
What a fantastic introduction too - some nice Steamboat arrangement ideas, well played!
(It seems to work better as a waltz than as a jig  (:) )

Here's one of mine, the best its going to get I think.  Isn't it nerve racking making a recording, I find it much worse than a performance.  I think that's maybe because you know you can have another go.   Anyway my special reason for posting is that I don't think anyone else has played the same B music that I know.  That's how I first heard it played, and how its written in a tunebook that I had to hand - for a long time I wasn't even aware there was another version (till I played it in England and everyone looked as me as if I'd gone mad).   Played in G on Hohner Pokerwork, pretty much straight up and down the rows.

Great stuff...well played, and it's good to hear an alternative part....reminds you how tunes evolve and change...

Is that a metal fingerboard on your pokerwork? Nice (:) Lovely version as well, I think I prefer it to the standard one.

Its a wooden finger board with aluminium finger plate (work in progress).

It's good when someone plays a different "B" part to everyone else. Throws them completely in the sessions. I do it a lot, as I don't wait to here the "B" part when I'm learning a tune :|bl and just make up my own. :|||: As I think it should go that way. Called "Folk process". :Ph

Liked the marked buttons on the box. Should do that with mine. Then I'd know where the one I want is when changing rows.  :|glug

Actually I'd advise against that.  I marked them when I was learning and did a lot of outdoor playing (could hardly feel my fingers, and sometimes played in gloves as well).   Trouble is that you start to rely on the marks and then you can't play anything else.

Yes. You could be right. :Ph Have managed so far. :Ph Don't do changing rows that much as yet.

Appropriate picture Lester, but received wisdom round these parts is that Mr Hill was thinking of this type of steamboat when he named the tune.  Though probably in Gateshead rather than South Shields.
