Tune of the Month for November 2010 - The Steamboat Hornpipe
« on: October 31, 2010, 11:21:07 PM »

Here we are, one year in! Hope you've had as much fun as I have; I've learned a lot, and it's great seeing other people develop over time too!

Following a frankly not very exciting poll, this months winner is 'The Steamboat Hornpipe', a classic old and extremely popular English hornpipe.

Courtesy of Lester (thanks Lester!), here's some ABC for it:

Code: [Select]
X:372
T:Steam-boat Hornpipe
M:4/4
L:1/8
K:G
(3def|g2 b>g d2 g>d|B>cd>B G2A>B|c2 e>c A2 c>A|F>GA>B c>de>f|
g2 b>g d2 g>d|B>cd>B G2 A>B|c>ed>c B>AG>F|A2 G2 G2:|
B>c|d>Bd>B g2 g2|e>ce>c a4|f2f2 g2g2|a>gf>e d2(3def|
g2 b>g d2 g>d|B>cd>B G2 A>B|c>ed>c B>AG>F|A2 G2 G2:|

There are oddly few melodeon based videos of this on youtube for people to listen to/copy, but this fiddle version is nicely paced:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkWCHwb6SrU

No doubt we'll get a few melodeon versions before long! Notes on playing it - not a lot to say really; I normally play this in G, and I'd class it as a classic 32 bar hornpipe. It plays nicely on one row, and indeed fits a 1 row melodeon perfectly.

Looking forward to seeing your versions of it!

Cheers,

Clive

Well beggar me. Good old James Hill, eh? I've known that tune for years as a very popular Irish hornpipe, LOL, with a variety of different names. McMahon's hornpipe, The Good-Natured Man, among them. The Irish squeeze a few more notes into it, to the benefit of the tune. And I think the Scots have a good claim on this tune too, given the composer's origins.  Great tune, anyway, look forward to member's renditions.

Well, I've only ever managed one video, and I found it really quite hard to sit in front of the camera and play the melodeon - although I've worked away at most of the tunes over the past year, I couldn't bring myself to have another go with the camera.

I recently got a Zoom H1 to play with - and, having spent the day nursing a cold, I couldn't think of anything better to do - so here's a somewhat imperfect rendering of Steam-boat Hornpipe from me, played on the recently-acquired Dino Baffetti Binci:

http://www.onmvoice.com/play.php?a=32473

It seemed slightly easier doing it this way - and it has the added benefit that you don't have to look at me while you listen.

Comments and abuse welcome!

Cheers,

Tony M.

As it happens I've already Youtubed this one - and paired it with my version of the song Lowlands.

As usual with me, the box is a Hohner 1140C one-row.

Thanks for that Gavin, really enjoyed it.
Lowlands is my favourite song at the the mo, so that was a great added extra for me (:)

I liked that version of the Steamboat, Gavin - nicely done.

I'm a bit envious of your singing ability, too - I couldn't stay in tune for two lines at a time!

Is that you perched on the bowsprit, then?

Cheers,

Tony

I'm sure I'd like to have been in that photo in that nice weather - but if I were I'd be 110 by now!

Here we go folks - an early recording from me too this month. I'm not quite sure what I can do with this tune yet - it doesn't (to my ear anyway) seem to open itself up to much opportunity for musical reworking (prove me wrong!) - so until inspiration strikes, here's a fairly straight version played on my old Hohner 1 row, in G:

Excellent, Clive! I really like this; it definitely suits the Hohner 1R4S in G. Such a consistent tempo throughout, with a hypnotic, almost relentless quality to it; understated, but powerful. Perhaps echoing or mimicking the steady throb of the Steamboat's engine? I can visualise long pistons moving back and forth, turning a big paddle wheel.

Right - here's mine:

This is a multi-tracked version played on a Castagnari Lilium 3-voice 2-row melodeon in D/G (using both 2 voices and 3 voices separately), a Hohner one-row four-stop melodeon in G and an anglo concertina in C/G.

Brilliant! I need to do something like this as I have some new sound recording software* and I need a project like this to learn how to get it to do multitracking. Expect a me-too imitation...

Have re-submitted my version of Steamboat Hornpipe with slightly tweaked balance settings. The separation between the instruments is clearer now.

That is just lovely. Looking forward to learning this tune and inspired. Might have to wait til after Witney though.

Wonder if multi-tasking tracking will be a trend this month.  ???

cheers

Despite promises of an imitation of Steve's Steamboat recording, I might concentrate the multitracking effort on the "session tunes" theme where it would be more appropriate. Mind you we do Steamboat quite a lot so it would do for either  :-\

Hey, what a fantastic version.  I love the Steamboat Hornpipe and all the variations in this version are brilliant.  I look forward to the day when I am as competent on the melodeon as this  ;)

I will upload my version next week sometime  :-\

First stab at the ToTM, more of a demo of my handy work on my refurbished Pokerwork. Finally decided it was tuned enough to inflict it on others  ;D The image is the state it was in before I improved it.

Will do at least one more version with TSMB on dulcimer (if I want to live)

It sounds pretty good to me Lester! I *love* the tiger stripes on the bellows - you must keep them!
