:|bl  I'm in need of a time compass.  Didn't read the year, hadn't expected a thread exhumation.  grovelling apologies.

No apologies necessary - I hadn't looked at the original date of the thread either, but it popped up when I went to "unread posts since last visit".

Cheers
Graham
Reports of LDT's death have been greatly exhumated >:E >:E
For once,  when I searched for a suitable MAD connection, I got the right result and hence kept threadpdrift to a minimum which is wot I am always being ordered to do.........
Grovelling apologies deliciously accepted >:E...after all revenge is a dish best served two-year's cold. ;D

I bloody love lists, especially when I do one that involves me.

Me and the girlfriend are both musical and have an array of things that make noises. Here's what we have:

Me:
3 boxes (in sig)
1 borrowed Hohner 1 row copy in C
1 toy melodeon
1 flute
1 glass flute
1 plastic descant recorder
1 classical acoustic guitar
1 electro acoustic guitar*
1 6 string electric (Danelectro U2-56)*
1 12 string electric (Rickenbacker 620/12)*
1 5 string bass (Schecter)*
1 mandolin
Various tin whistles
1 oboe
1 piano

* Lefty

Girlfriend:
1 flute
1 piccolo
1 sopranino recorder
3 descant recorders
1 alto recorder
1 tenor recorder
1 bass recorder
1 cello

I'm 21 and she's 17. We may have a problem later in life...

I have to admit that I have already 16 button boxes  .. at least

I'm playing regularly on ...

Giovani Parigi GC (the work horse)
Hohner Morgane DG (for all that english stuff)
Castagnary Ciacy BC (for irish stuff)
1-row 4-voice Hohner C (simple tunes with simple bass/chords sound best on it)

I'm playing sometimes ... (need refurbishent, but not unplayable)

  Hohner Club IV CF
  Hohner Club X CF
  Hohner Corona IIIR GCF
  Hohner Liliput CF
  Hohner Preciosa CF

Lent to somebody ...

Hohner Erica GC (lent to melodeon beginner)

Ongoing refurbishment

  21/8 by Karl Schwirsch DG
21/8 by Continental GC (I plan to lend it to some melodeon beginner)

More or less refurbished

1-row 8-voice monster in D (not really playable)

Unplayable, need refurbishment

  Hohner Club II CF
  Hohner Elysium II CF
  3-row Royal Standard GCF

Folks:  Mandolin players use the distinction of callling acquisition disorder, Mandolin Acquisition Syndrome or MAS.  In the MAS world, there is no cure but sometimes you can go into remission. On a former discussion of MAS, a mandolin player posted Rules for Collecting Hammond Organs. Imagine collecting instruments as large as Hammond organs.  Some of you might find some parallels to MAD and MAS in these rules. (by the way, I also have MAD badly) See link below:

I thoroughly enjoyed those "rules"   ;D

Unfortunately, her ladyship was looking over my shoulder at the time  .  .  .

.  .  .  and here I am, awaiting the arrival of the latest acquisition.

(Fortunately, she quite saw the funny side too!)

Oh, well!   ::)

Likewise - I've cut down the number of guitars & related instruments I own, so I'm now reduced to

2x Epiphone acoustics, one Japanese-built in 1974 and the other modern Korean
2x Epiphone Sheraton electrics
A Fender Tele
A Fender Jazz bass
A Yamaha electric bass
A Korean-built acoustic bass
2 x mandolins
An Irish bouzouki
A Tunisian oud
A ukulele

Perhaps I could sell off some of the duplicates to make room for more melodeons.......

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

Can I play again?  I hit 50 last year--which seemed to be a sort of threshold...at which I started thinking considerably more about death :|glug than instrument acquisition...which grew to around 70 (an estimate), before my sense of mortality and temperance made me rethink this whole thing, and start offloading some of my haul.

 :|glug

Alas, to not much avail...as I only converted from an excessive stringed instrument hold to other stuff.

Sold a few "spares" in the closet, and traded about a dozen guitars, banjos and ukes:

Acquired two saxophones, a couple of keyboards, a set of congas, some speaker cabs, and another fiddle.

I suppose there must be some correlation between the Laws of Thermodynamics and instrument acquisition. :|glug

MAD is just a subset of SAD (stuff acquisition disorder)  which afflicts nearly all humans but particularly those in the western world.

Why is anything fun considered a "disorder"? Order and conformity are so boring.

Enjoy making music every day. Don't worry, be happy, as the song says.

And now for something completely different, I now have an electric Hawaiian guitar that should take me off in an entirely new musical direction.

Years ago I saw a book/compact disc combo called "Gravikords Whirlies and Pyrophones" by Bart Hopkin. It is all about experimental musical instruments. I did not buy it at the time, but I recently found a copy on a "closeout" table at the record store. It has some fascinating ideas.

I am currently enthralled by Pat Metheny's "Orchestrian" tour. He has actually hooked up all the crazy mechanical instruments that I have only thought about.

One of these days I am going to get enough solenoids to play my marimbas and xylophones with an extra keyboard attached to one of my Hammond or Wurlitzer organs.

I enjoy going to band organ museums and rallies.

For many years there was a wonderful music museum in Deansboro, New York which unfortuately closed a few years ago. All of the instruments were auctioned off.

Knoebel's Amusement Park in Elysburg, Pennsylvania hosts a band organ rally every two years. They have quite a few instruments at the park but the rally is musical heaven. It is a bit like Amsterdam, Holland in the United States.

I have:
Hohner Pokerwork D/G
Hohner Erika Bb/Eb (Club tuning)

I have had:
Hohner Liliput C/F
Hohner Club III C/F

I would like/am lusting over...
Hohner Liliput C/F for singing with
Baffetti Oakwood Binci 3 voice D/G for special Morris
Castagnari Mory D/G for sessions
Castagnari Roma G/C cos the one I played was fecking gorgeous
Hohner 1 row 4 stop in D for the hell of it
Beltuna Sara 3 A/D, to complete the set and because the one I played was fecking gorgeous  :P
A Hayden system Duet concertina becaue it is the most sensible concertina layout I've ever seen.

I'm not sure you can really call what I have MAD, as I seem to fail at the whole 'acquisition' bit.
