Tuition in North Suffolk
« on: November 07, 2010, 01:13:58 PM »

Hi world,

I've been bashing my DELICA D/G for a few years and haven't got beyond the rudimentary stuff. Other commitments and interests have slowed me down and I think it's time I found someone who can help propel
me to the next level. Does anybody know of someone in the North Suffolk/Lowestoft area who may be able to help??

Hi there, boxman1a - welcome to melodeon.net.
You didn't say what kind of D/G stuff you want to concentrate on, and this is going to determine your progress beyond the plateau.
If it's Morris you're into, get thee to a local session (look in Mardles - Suffolk Folk magazine - for venues) and make yourself known.
I was in the same boat a little while back and joined the village Morris side - it does wonders for your learning curve, and you meet all sorts of strange folk.

Hi Johnners,

Thanx for your response. I have an open mind as to where the box can take me and don't want to commit to a single style at this stage. I haven't been able to locate a morris team close to my base but wouldn't rule it out when I find one. Thanx again for your input.

Hi Rees,

Thanks for your input. I've already emailed EATMT and am awaiting a reply. Unfortunately their activities are generally based quite a distance from where I live. But I live in hope.

Thanx again
Boxman1a.

Tony Hall is in Beccles, which I believe is located somewhere near Mars.

Nah much less accessible than Mars, Rees - what say Johhners ?

Sorry, can't help with anyone I know boxman1a, and if you're Lowestoft way it is a fair drag down to Stowmarket for their evening classes - keep an eye out for Prestidigitator as he's in southern coastal Suffolk (wait while I just wash my hands) and may have an idea. Otherwise a good tutor book / DVD, lots of CD's to listen to and pick up the tunes into memory (try those from Veteran if you want traditional local stuff) and book early for Melodeons and More day next year, it was there a couple of years ago under the TLC of our very own Rees that I finally got some idea in how to properly use the left hand  >:(

Richard - closer to the North Sea than Suffolk, and getting closer by the minute..............

You should certainly come to the EATMT M&M day, well worth it and you'll meet lots of melnetters there.
Also look out for a copy of Mardles magazine (declaration of interest: I'm the editor) and look there for local morris teams and bands and maybe seek out some of the musicians for Old Glory Molly (Middleton area), or East Sussex Morris, or go to the sessions at the Eel's foot (Thursdays and Sundays, I think), The Middleton Bell (infrequent but good, there's one on Dec 11th but don't tell anyone I told you) and talk to players there. Or the Waveney Folk Club in Lowestoft, which has a resident melodeon player or two, I think.

P.S. if you really can't find a copy of Mardles you can buy it on line at the Suffolk Folk web site for the princely sum of £2.00 inc. postage.

Tony Hall is in Beccles, which I believe is located somewhere near Mars.

Unless he's moved, Tony lives near Aylsham in Norfolk, though he comes from Beccles originally (not sure why anyone would want to move to Norfolk from Suffolk). Geographically, or perhaps celestially, Aylsham is nearer to Mars than Beccles. He does play from time to time at the "Iron Duke" pub  (real name Duke of Wellington) in Norwich. Norwich has a lot going on, (Golden Star, Kemps et al) and I would think that tuition might be had there.

Anahata has listed the venues around here. There is also the Blaxhall Ship, where TH plays occasionally, and which has regular music , singing and stepdancing sessions. There has been a dire shortage of pub venues in the Southwold area, mainly because of the way the place has changed and the pubs are now food establishments rather than boozers. That caused TH's Whitsun visit to be relocated from the Lord Nelson where its been held for 30+ years (but he couldn't get to it this year anyway). There are moves to arrange something new and interesting in the way of sessions locally (change of landlord), but early days as yet. There are also some players in Beccles, but I don't know the details.

All the musicians for Old Glory are of the gentle sex (that's the tradition), and very good they are too - the highlight of Christmas around here for me.

Alex Goldsmith lives here as well, and he certainly has tutoring experience from M & M. I don't offhand know whether he does or would offer individual tuition.

I have an idea that there is someone, possibly Shadingfield way, who tutors. I'll make some enquiries and report back.
