Poll: Tune of the Month for December 2010
« on: November 23, 2010, 09:33:58 PM »

Here we go again! 4 tunes to choose, let's see who wins this time (I'd happily vote for any of these)!

Duchess/Dark Girl was last month's runner up:

ABC for Duchess/Dark Girl, courtesy of Lester:

Spotify users can find an amazing version of Duchess/Dark Girl (labelled 'The Duchess Dressed in Blue') on Tiger Moth's album 'Mothballs Plus'; Courtesy of our own Anahata, we have a splendid version by Ethel's Cats (second tune). We're talking about the english tune by the way, not the irish tune with the same name which is *completely* different.

--

Three Sea Captains:

Here's a nice slow version, played on guitar. It's been embellished with a few extra accidentals in this video, but you get the idea. An infeasibly catchy tune which sticks in the brain.

--

The Moon and Seven Stars (also known as just 'Seven Stars')

Luca Celano has thoughtfully put up a tutorial for this tune including a run through at normal speed, and then breaking it down into bits. A nice jig with lots of opportunity for harmony/power chords on the B music.

--

La Marianne:

A beautifully simple waltz written by Frederic Paris of La Chavanee, the chap who wrote Canal in October.

Here's a version of it played on a Castagnari Giordy! All you need is half a melodeon to play this apparently!  ;D

... and there you go. Happy voting!

Clive

Just to say that 'La Marianne' is very much the symbol of France 'as a State'.  Love the Waltz (I'd thought it trad Berrichon) - it's an easy play and you can have great fun with the 'twiddles'.   She's nowadays elected with a famous 20th  paradigm being Brigitte Bardot.

There's also another rather wonderful Luca Calano Youtube tutorial

But I still rather fancy that dark girl in blue m'self

[edit] Hang on a bit - that's not the Stanley Holloway song tune!

Note her 'Phrygian' cap!

I was always under the impression the "English" tune WAS Irish - didn't it come from Michael Gorman's fiddle playing?

I should have added - I know the Irish "DGDIB" tune you refer to, Clive, and yes, it is entirely different! But I seem to remember some sleeve notes somewhere in the dim & distant that credited the Rod Stradling/Tiger Moth tune to Michael Gorman. I can't remember at this distance whether I picked up the tune from Tiger Moth or from Flowers & Frolics/Gas Mk 5 - I just seem to have known it for decades.

La Marianne:
A beautifully simple waltz written by Frederic Paris of La Chavanee, the chap who wrote Canal in October.

The same player has a lovely performance of L'Inconnu de Limoise too, which I don't think I'd spotted before.

The race is on and in the lead is, a Dark Girl Dressed in Blue. But the Moon and Seven Tars are shining bright. And seeing 3 Captains dragging their heels. Waltzing to a Marianne.

I voted for your tune. Is that the one we played at Slusscaféet this summer? I

Not having contributed yet, I don't usually vote... but I had to plump for the Three Sea Captains. Lord knows why, but it was one of the first tunes I attempted on the box, and the first in G (that's on the D row for me). BTW Clive I wouldn't call that guitar clip a slow version. I've played the tune for hard-shoe step dancers and they usually want it a tad slower than that. I don't think that playing it at jig speed does the tune any favours.

I suppose it's about time I learned to cross-row The Seven Stars rather than playing it one-handedly...  :|bl

As I usually play it on a 1-row I'd find that a tad difficult :D
