Here's my contribution for December: a multitracked fantasia played on my 'EATMT Stowmarket Special' 1-row four-stop melodeon in D. An experiment with different voice combinations, different tempos and a touch of LvB - all in glorious stereophonic sound. (:)

Wonderful recording ! It is surprising how many sounds you can get out of one melodeon. How do you do that ?

Fantastic Steve :) Those low reeds sound absolutely gorgeous when used on their own. And I was waiting for most of the recording for the overlying theme, you managed to suggest it without actually playing it.

Thanks, everyone!  I certainly had a lot of fun doing it. (:)

@Anahata: So who's going to contact Fiona Talkington and Verity Sharp - you or me?  :|bl

@Ukebert: The low reeds are indeed nice: Binci - I'm very pleased with them. I don't actually use them completely on their own anywhere in the recording though. They are always paired either with the H or M reeds, or else with the whole lot going.

@Mayord: The melodeon has four banks of reeds ('voices') on the RH side which can be switched in or out independently at will, using the stops. They are tuned L, M, M+ and H. If you are not sure what that means, please refer to my Voices and Tunings article  available from the home page of this website.

The recording is built up from six tracks recorded in Apple's Garageband with a single cheap and cheerful Behringer C-2 microphone. Here's roughly what happens:

Track 1: 0':0" - 1':13". Tune on M M+, no basses/chords.
Track 2: 0':39" - 1':47". Tune on L H with bass/chords.
Track 3: 1':13" to end. Tune on L M M+ H with bass/chords.
Track 4: 1':47" to end. Tune on M H, no basses/chords.
Track 5: 1':47" to end. Half-tempo tune in 2/4 time on L M M+, no basses/chords, but RH chords added at 2':25". Tune changes to OtJ at 3'30".
Track 6: 4':05" to end. Additional OtJ on L M voices.

Mixing/processing in Garageband:
Post recording, the tracks were stereophonically spatially separated, had the volume levels adjusted, and a modest amount of reverberation applied. Final mixdown was done in Garageband to standard two-track stereo AIFF, then converted in iTunes to mp3 format for posting on Omnvoice.

Hours of fun! (About 6 actually, from start to finish)

Oh, I'm so enjoying this recording of yours, Steve! Fabulous stuff, and so clever with all that contrapuntal stuff at different speeds, and then what happens at the end  ... well I won't spoil the surprise for anyone who hasn't listned yet, but I'm still grinning with pleasure. Well done!

I don't think Verity is doing LJ any more, which is a shame because she would have been the best bet.
But I have her home email address  ;)

I also have a pair of Behringer C2s - they are amazing value for money!

Ah, having listened to it again, yes you did have the H reeds in play. Lovely, lovely sound.

Thanks. I was worried my tempo was all over the place. As I started off fine but by third time through my arm wanted to fall off.

I think that sounds great! I think this tune is very hard to get flow into, with all those push and pulls that you have to do even with a 2-row box.

I love D. Mallinson's tune books because they have simple but great accompanyment. Unfortunately, I cannot find this tune in the books I have. Many of the members in this group are great in working out accompanyment for D/G. Can you share your version? it would be very much appreciated. Thank you,

Here's my contribution. It's a favourite with my band Florida, so I wonder just a little what our 'proper' melodeon player Tim will think.

Still it's been fun as these things usually are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKtRbwb38bA

I really enjoyed this rendition of seven stars. The held note variation starting at 27 sec really adds something to it.
Well played. Was this multi-tracked ?
