Poll: Tune of the Month for March 2011
« on: February 22, 2011, 12:30:24 AM »

Here we go again folks!

Last month's runner up - Cheshire Waltz - see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh_dNzXhT50] and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LkUsK_Ort8] - a lovely old English waltz.

The Valiant, a 48 bar jig by Simon Ritchie - see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqMIvKferH0 courtesy of our own Anahata, and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4tA7gZS4tE, played by Ed Rennie.

The History Man - a slow air/march/reel thingy written by Andy Cutting - and it's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30KFNXNTN5w (non melodeon version alert - it's the flute part that you're listening for, by the way - it comes in after 20-30 seconds or so)

Chassepain - a 2 time bourree, written by Gilles Chabanet, I believe. Here's a couple of nice versions of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFK7rja9XPY (cheers Ollie) and me old mate Alan Day here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnl2vY1zXms, playing it on Anglo.

... and there we go. Some slightly less, er, predictable choices this time round, but each of them a classic, or a classic in the making.

Cheers,

Clive

How do you pronounce chassepain? Chas-e-pan? Shassy-pan? Chas-e-pain? Cheesey-pan?

Well, I say 'shas-a-pan', but I'm probably *totally* wrong.

I say "Shass-ay-pan", but I have no real idea.

Hi ! As a french speaker, i'd say chassepain should actually be pronounced 'chass-a-pain' with 'a' as the wowels in 'learn' for example in 'good french'  ::), but in an everyday spoken french, this would rather be 'chass-pain'. I don't feel like actually able to play any of the suggestions, so i won't vote, but i'll sure be able to participate in a few months !

All well worth learning, but anyone who plays for dance needs all the 48 bar tunes they can get!

If it's chasse pain or chassepain it is still the same pronunciation unless you are from the high pyrenees or deep Quebec (without the accents) coz locals tend to verbalise the e - sort of chassuh pan(g) (or even pen(g)with a hint of a 'g'.
But for 'ere: Shass pan probably the way to go.

Presume it is about a "hunter's loaf" or pain de chasse.......... although it could be a convoluted "chase the bread' game!  >:E
