Which festivals are you going to this year?
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:34:00 PM »

Just Beverley for me (so far). Meet some old friends, visit my parents (and introduce them to my good lady for the first time). I probably won't take any instruments with me from London, but I have my childhood (well, teenage) Corona II A/D/G still at my parents' place, so might lug that round to a few sessions.

Tricky question!

My job makes it very difficult for me to take time off during the summer, but I'm hoping to change jobs soon (fingers crossed and touching wood).

I usually do Cropredy, but it would be nice to have a change.  Towersey looks good.

Done Hastings Jack-in-the Green, Shepley and Chippenham, yet to do Warwick, Whitby and probably Saddleworth. Also a couple of Morris weekends here and there.

Having a bit of a mad year here - already done Oxford and Shepley, still to come: Southwell, Larmertree, Towersey and Bromyard. Next year might be (will be!) a bit more relaxed. Gotta take advantage of getting to as many as possible in my first real year as a folkie  ;D Would like to do Sidmouth or Whitby next year, as I've heard only good things about them, and have people to go with!

Just back from Chester FF. Squeezy on form, although their set at the sunday evening concert was far too short.
Also saw Anahata for the first time - definitely worth catching at other festivals this summer. He and Mary have some great tunes.

Not sure what's next, I need to earn some more beer tokens first!

I've my ticket for Whitby burning a hole in its twelve lever Bramah (as recommended by Mr S Holmes Esq) security box and I'm eagerly awaiting liftoff. I prefer the Fish and Chips to the Crab Salads, especially that from the shop at the corner of Church Street and the Swing Bridge! Oh, and the music and Yorkshire equivalent of "The Craic" (I don't think we have a word for this - possibly since the connection was lost when the Danes ceased trading the twin thrones of York and Dublin between themselves) are good as well. Roll on the day!

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Yorkshire equivalent of "The Craic" (I don't think we have a word for this - possibly since the connection was lost when the Danes ceased trading the twin thrones of York and Dublin between themselves) are good as well.
We, of course, don't need an English version of "The Craic" as it's a dubious Irish version of "The Crack" an English slang term.

I remember "What's the crack?" as a common greeting in South Wales in the late fifties.

It was actually "What's the crack, butt" which is quite funny as "craic" (with an acute accent on the "a") means arsehole in Gaelic.
Butt = mate or butty.

Its similar in Northeast England where "havin' a bit crack" means having an informal chat with ones friends.

They don't bother spelling it funny in Scotland either.  Who can forget Nigel Denver singing

We're all met thegither here tae sit and tae crack,
Wi' our glasses in oor hands an' oor work upon oor back
There's no a trade in a' the earth can either mend or mak'
We a' need the work o' the weavers.

If anyone ever starts talking about a music and self-consciously tries to pronounce it differently from 'session' I always take it as a portent that no good will follow....

I'm glad someone has raised the Craic issue it has bugged me for years. Weve been cracking jokes for as long as I remember.
Just another aspect of how to build an economic activity based on a perceived or engineered culture and advertising (A bit like Magner's cider!)
Only a few years ago Bulmers was the popular drink to get rid of a hangover after the Guinness, where is Magener's brewed and where do the apples come from? And who owns it?
Dr Johnson wrote' No Irishman ever planted an orchard'
I'm from an Irish family by the way but find phoney Celtery and its links a hindrance to progress.
I remember when Christy Moore was flogging round English folk clubs and getting little work at home and traditional music was being kept alive in local communities
And when I sang The Shoals of Herring and was told 'Thats The Shores of Erin' So that's Yarmouth in Co.Clare is it I asked to a blank stare.

I think I'm getting something off my chest hear!

Coincidentally ............... our local tune session in Welshpool, which is right on the Wales/England border, was in full swing last Wednesday night. The crack was bostin' as our tourists from Wolverhampton would say. Due to our location the tunes are mainly Welsh or English with a bit of foreign muck thrown in for variety.
In walks Bert, a local buider. "What's all this?" says Bert.
"It's a traditional music session" replies Nigel accidentally potting the black.
"Sounds nothing like real Irish music" fumes Bert leaving the pub in disgust.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!

So at last - my first posting on the new forum

Tenterden this year.

We live about four miles from Tenterden so we're bound to be there. Sounds like a beer is in order, and it's always a pleasure to meet other squeezers.  ;D

Shall we try a Whitby meet again? Or do we need to see the Programme first? :-\

...pausing only to drain his pint of iced cider, no doubt.
