Tune of the Month for January 2011 - La Marianne
« on: January 01, 2011, 12:34:44 AM »

We have a new tune to play - La Marianne, a wonderfully pretty yet simple waltz written by Frederic Paris of La Chavannee (he who wrote Le Canal en Octobre).

Here's a couple of videos to get us going...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEuQ81GV8wU

and a Luca Celano tutorial,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtSP7jrAC8I&

Lester, have you got an ABC for this please?

Cheers,

Clive

Here's another Youtube version which sticks more closely to the ABC notes. There are also some nice variations of the A music later on in the recording.

I determine that on my G/C/F Hohner I should play this song in "F"
Yes - this tune goes nicely on the inside row of any melodeon, so F would indeed be a good key. Nice and mellow.  :|glug

I note you use the word 'song'. Are there lyrics (words) to La Marianne? If so, please share them with us. I should like to learn them.
Or are you using the word 'song' in in its (regrettably) increasingly modern internet-driven meaning as a synonym for 'tune'?

Does this tune include any chords that are not "built in" the basses? It doesn't sound standard, or is that just my impression of it?

There's an e-minor on the second bar of the A section.  This requires you to play the E bass (push) and then the G chord (push).  So, it's an e-minor 7, I think.  The tutorial that Clive linked to shows it pretty clearly.  The B section is a very standard IV-I-V-I that shows you how beautiful standard chord progressions can be!

Thanks for the tip.  I did not know the tune-o-tron would change keys for you that way. ;D

This was the first Frederic Paris tune I ever heard and one of the first I learned.  I play close to the pace he does on Carnet de Bal, but I have no way of checking because that cassette died years ago.  I do remember playing it in France and being told, "Faster!  Faster!"

The other thing is that the variations that Paris plays are great, so, whenever I play I try to do variations, but always find them a bit disappointing.  I was going to NOT do variations for this recording, but then I did.  Live in the moment.

Or are you using the word 'song' in in its (regrettably) increasingly modern internet-driven meaning as a synonym for 'tune'?
It seems to come from a marketing concept.  MP3 machines can record so many "songs".  What they won't tell you is how few seconds they consider a "song" to last.  If I want to record a performance will it last?  GOK  Follows on from the use of various invented ways of measuring Watts output.  RMS has meaning - music power does not.

Likewise, what the media calls a band is by definition a choir, or more accurately a bunch of talentless twats groaning & squeaking into a tune-o-matic.

Yes, its Sunday and my plans have gone down the tubes as everyone else is ill or shopping (!!!??)  So why can't I get this tune right?

Rob.

But there is no E bass on a D/G box as far as I know. Or are you talking about a G/C box here? I tried the B bass and D chord on the D/G box but didn't think it sounded right (The B bass was ok but not the D chord after). The guy with the wee box in the video played a cleaner chord than that.
Can it be that it sounds different because my box is one voiced??

Here we go! Its odd how as soon as you get in front of a microphone your playing goes out the window, I play it beautifully normally, honest  ;)

Tried changing from oom pah pah towards the end of the clip, will be interesting to see what other people have done

For F - I watched the man with the little melodeon and I think he is doing basses similar to the tutorial.  So I determined -

In "G":       In "F":

So if you take the bass sheet music from the tutorial and change from G to F.  This is what I think he's doing, I could be wrong.  Hope this helps someone.
Tks Ben and Anah! (:)

Yup - your doubt was probably right as my conversion trick produced the same score as the C (but with a flat symbol thrown in for appearances sake!)
Your's looks more McCoy! tks again.

Where might I find the "bass sheet music from the tutorial"? I'm sure it will be perfectly obvious when someone gives me a clue, but right now I'm totally mystified.

Sorry about that.  Here is the tutorial in (I believe) D/G melodeon played in G:

http://bellowsandstrings.blogspot.com/2010/03/la-marianne.html

You will find sheet music for the melody and the basses on that page.  Here is the youtube where he shows you how to play the tune:

Much thanks from me to L. Celano for providing thes fine resources.  Hope this helps, Ben

No, you're right.  I'm playing it on a G/C box.  You'd have to transcribe appropriately for a D/G box.  That would be B Bass (push) followed by D Chord (push push).  Sorry for the confusion.

Also, I very much enjoy the version in the tutorial but don't use those basses for the B section.  I use a simple IV-I-V-I, as Paris does.  That's F-C-G(pull)-C on my G/C, which would be D-G-A(pull)-D on the D/G. Which isn't to say this is "the right way."
