A new month/year, and a new theme for us to try - another geographic theme, and this time it's tunes from the USA. There's tremendous diversity and variety in American music, from Appalachian, Cajun, American-Irish, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Country, and many, many more, including I'm quite sure some that many of us have never even heard of. It's also a chance to try your hand at 'Over the Waterfall' if you're disappointed that Dark Girl Dressed in Blue didn't make it! Other well known American tunes include Midnight on the Water, and of cause Jay Ungar's Ashokan Farewell that was TOTM last January.

Looking forward to hearing what you uncover!

Cheers,

Clive

So this theme appealing to one of my other hats: here are a couple I posted before joining melodeon.net, but which fit the bill. (The Blue Peter pack). As ever, rough n ready.

I will think about a fresh one to post before the end of the month.

Wow! Brilliant. I particularly enjoyed Blackberry Blossom.

I used to play guitar for an Appalachian dance team and love these tunes - not sure my box playing is up to it yet but will now go and peruse my Fidlers Fakebook for inspiration

I first time trying the tune of the month:  and it's a hard one!  I'm such a europhile.  It says "tunes" so Stephen Foster songs and the such, or hymns, would be inappropriate.  I'll have to give this a think.  Nice job on the "Ragtime Annie."

The first rule of Theme of the Month Club is that there are no rules and even if there were they would be open to as broad an interpretation as you care to apply  >:E

The first rule of Theme of the Month Club is that there are no rules...

Hmm.  No rules...

I was supposed to be going away over the New Year period, but the dreaded 'flu put paid to that.  Anyhow, I suppose that's given me the chance to find something else to do.  So earlier today, I got Arthur to have a go at playing a Californian political-punk-pop anthem for this month's Theme.  I'm not sure whether it works from a musical perspective, but the concept rather amuses me.

So, here's Arthur's take on Green Day's 'Holiday'.

The tune is "There Will Be a Happy Meeting," a southern church hymn made famous as an instrumental by Joseph Spence, the Bahamian guitarist.  I heard it first from the late, wonderful cellist Tom Cora.  I've heard Garrison Keillor sing it on Prairie Home Companion, and Iris Dement does a great job with it on one of her CDs.

"There will be a happy meeting in Heaven I know
When we see the many loved ones we've known here below
Standing on the blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow
That will be a glad reunion day."

I'm not a church goer, but love church music, and think the melodeon suits church music wonderfully.

Nicely done!  I learned that piece on the guitar years ago from a Ry Cooder transcription.  I think it is the same tune as Spence's 'Great Dream from Heaven' but with different lyrics.  You've inspired me to try it on the melodeon.

Glad to see you back on form. The group missed you as there'd been a bit of buildup - but I persuaded them that HH1N1 wasn't to be welcomed! ::)

Awwww, it seems I've let even more people down than I thought  :( .  I trust it all went well.

Thanks.

(BTW, I uploaded another of Arthur's efforts today, but as it's not from the USA, I won't mention it here)

Thank you!  I had forgotten Ry Cooder's doing that, and he did it twice, once on "Purple Valley" (title?) and once on "Jazz."  There are others that he's done of Spence's tunes.  I think I'll take a shot at "Face to Face That I Shall Meet Him."

I know I should know more about this tune than that it appeared on Ry Cooder's film album 'The Long Riders' but I'm afraid I don't really. It seems to be called either The Seneca Square Dance or Waiting For the Federals - I'd previously thought that these were two different tunes played, one quick and one slow but having listened to a few versions the name seems to be interchangeable. I thought it might prove quite popular as a US tune so I thought I'd get my effort in early! http://www.onmvoice.com/play.php?a=36941

Yeah, Well If I only had a brain.  :Ph

This was inspired by the Classic 40's Christmas film With Liza Minelli's Mum in it.

I wonder if some side could do a Molly Dance to this ?
