A couple of recordings from me this month, and we're off to New England for some Shaker hymn music. The story of the Shakers is an interesting one, and apart from their furniture and architecture styles for which they are well known, they have left a wonderful tradition of simple hymn music too.

I found these tunes through William Coulter and Barry Phillips, whose instrumental guitar/cello/violin albums are just wonderful, and they've done 3 albums of Shaker music, two of which you can get from Amazon UK here.

So here we have:

Love is Little / Tree of Life.

and

Canterbury Solemn Song / Lord Protect thy Chosen Flock

Tree of Life, in particular, I think is just a *gorgeous* tune. So much so in fact, that I change from Love is Little after about 2 mins, and then apparently lose myself in Tree of Life for the next 4 mins. I hadn't intended the track to last that long! Played on a Castagnari Mory in D/G, with the old unisonoric basses in full flow.

Enjoy,

Clive

Clive; I really enjoyed your shaker hymns. Do you hold some buttons down right through a bellows change ?
Very smooth and beautiful sound. What mic / recording device do you use  ?

Thanks folks - it's all recorded on a Macbook, using iMovie for the video and GarageBand for the sound, recorded simultaneously, and the Garageband sound used to replace the iMovie sound. The sound is recorded on an old Sony ECM MS907 stereo microphone designed for use with a minidisc recorder (you can still get these on ebay for about £50), which is plugged into the laptop via a B-Tech BT26 single channel pre-amp (about £30 from Amazon).

There's lots of buttons being held down - in fact, because I'm playing unisonorically there's probably a G drone on the bass going virtually all the time!

Cheers,

Clive

I think I may have a go at "Waiting for the Federals" as well. John Spiers uses it as a learning device on his teaching CD with Lucy Huzzard (a lady to watch out for, incidently), so I can kill two birds with one stone as it were. As usual though I shan't post it, because of low mechanical skills.  :Ph

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

There are old people and even girls  >:E on melnet who have the "mechanical skills"  so may be you should spend some time learning them and share your music  ;)

Hi Ladyd;
I like this Joe Clark rendition. Sounds great on this 4 stop.
What type of 4 stop is this one ?
Have you other recordings/videos using this melodeon ?

Hi Jackson! 1 post and your a star. Miss New Orleans is a lovely
name for a lovely melody. I would also like to hear you play it on
a dryer note. They have so much wet down there and drying it out
could be fun to hear also.

Thanks for the friendly words to a new guy!  I tried it on the one-reed setting and it is a good sound.
