New Year Video Posting .... 3 Waltzes!
« on: January 02, 2011, 11:36:42 PM »

For a Christmassy New Year to All!!

3 lovely waltzes originally heard from the playing of Andy Cutting and more lately from my mate Saul Rose. They are 'In Continental Mood' , 'The Old Queen' and 'La Choca'
I thought I'd give this video a bit of a Christmas / New Year feel :-)

Played on my DG Castagnari Mory .

Those are great!  If it's not tedious, can I ask about your bass set up.  Watching your fingers, you're all over the twelve buttons, playing descending bass lines etc.  Clearly not the bass system I have.  Actually, listening to your other videos (while I work) you do all sorts of great things with your basses.  Very inspiring.

I have the standard Castagnari Bass set up ..which i prefer now!.. The first tune uses the classic descending bass run of around 6 descending notes .. it also uses 1 accidental to get the B music right .. but to match the chording there's a lot of cross rowing on the melody.
2nd tune also uses 1 accidental too to make the ends of the B music work ... this is for me the tricky bit of the tune! .. less Bass run but its sort of in D plus a bit of some other key and a lot of cross rowing to get it to work.
3rd tune seems like a different key again as the Basses use a completely different pattern ... again a lot of cross rowing particularly in the B part
Nice when it all comes together ... but they are fairly hard tunes!  Derek

Hi Derk,
Thanks for making another public appearance. I hope this year you will present us with more of your playing. Do your own thing. It's always great listening and watching.
MORE this year. please

I use a ZOOM H4 recorder simultaneously with the HD Camcorder... Then run the sound file through a bit of reverb and bass lift with Cubase.
I actually point the recorder slightly toward the bass side and play about 4ft away from it (recorder level with the middle of the box!)

Derek,
A great set and played really well.
I struggled for ages with the B part of The Old Queen and gave up in the end because I just couldn't do it the way I wanted to on a standard D/G.
I know how hard it is and I take my hat off to you for that performance ;o)

Watching these has made me want to dig out the dots for In Continental Mood and give it a try.  I think I must have looked at it briefly a while back and quickly given up.  But it seems a lot more do-able, now that I've heard it and had a quick run though.  So, thanks for the inspiration...
