Oh, dear I'm stuck on a plateu
« on: January 17, 2011, 02:20:16 PM »

My playing has plateued.....
I appear to be stuck...might even be going backwards.
Seem to have lost my timing. And my arms get so tired soo quickly now.
What's gone wrong? Do I blame the violin for making me a weakling?

*sigh*

It happens to us all I think.  Just keep plugging away and after a while you will start to improve again.
My fiddle paying is worse than plateaued, its gone backwards after a few weeks without playing over the holiday.  :'(

Sounds like the some of the fiddlers I've played with in bands and with morris sides.......

This might sound really strange - but try playing a slower melodeon.

I used to have a Castagnari Tomy and a Lilly, so I know how fast and responsive they are and you hardly have time to think before the note is playing.
The boxes require such a light delicate touch that it's really easy for them to run away with you....

I would say build up your skills on something like a Pokerwork, then go back to the Tomy when it's ready for you....

I'd need a violin with frets on the neck, my fingering and bowing is awful and I gave up ages ago.

However - I started playing mandolin, and having got used to that, I might get the left hand working better on a violin now - but the bowing would still have me stumped.

If that's a plateau.... I'd hate to hear a trough.   >:E

PS No need to thank me. I've learned to be encouraging over years of teaching instruments to beginners. It comes entirely naturally to me now.  ;)

Here is something that might be of interest too.

If you cant get to local music sessions for whatever reason or don't feel comfortable at sessions there is this great Webpage from the BBC of all people.

Radio 2 Virtual Folk and Acoustic Session.  Pick a set of tune, click play and away ya go playing along - there are even the dots there to follow.

Have fun

Isn't that a viola damoure? (not sure how that should be spelt)  Or was it the viola da gamba?

Rob.

P.S. I just had a look at the fretter - maybe I should get one and get my fiddle back (lent to the squire to re-learn).

It took me three years to get my intonation reasonably decent, and it still wanders if I'm under pressure (eg somebody is listening to me)
Learning the fiddle is the most difficult skill I've ever attempted to learn, don't underestimate the amount of work you need to do.
Has your teacher showed you how to listen to resonance between the strings eg between 3rd finger D on the A string and the open D.  When that third finger is in precisely the right place you should be able to hear the D string ringing, you may even be able to see it vibrate.  That was the key to moving toward better intonation for me.

Some sort of viol, certainly, I'm not that good with bowed strings. The Celtic Viol is an album with folk music played on a viol, that has frets. Sounds nice too.

You are playing slightly 'flat' - so if you tune your fiddle slightly 'sharp' it'll sound in tune when you play..... :)

Glad to help
