There's been some interesting stuff in here - thanks.

I'd completely forgot about Run Runaway - so, was pleased to be reminded about it again.  The one thing I've gone and tried so far, though, is Buddy Holly's 'Peggy Sue'.  You're right, it seems to just fall out of the box by itself.  Good call!

LDT - I really like the White Stripes too, but I think I'd stuggle to find one of their songs that I'd be able to make work on an unaccompanied melodeon.  Maybe someone else will take up the challenge though?

I've tried some Glenn Miller tunes before and they seemed to be worth pursuing further at some point.

At the moment, I've got an old punk song in the works that I'm realy enjoying playing, even though, upon first sight, it would seem like a really bad idea.  Maybe I'll decide to record it at some point.

I think Glen Miller would work well.

I'd like love to hear the old punk song  8)

Burning Bridges - Status Quo

I have alway been suprised that no morris side has picked up and run with the excellent jig in the middle of Burning Bridges, by Quo.
Yup, its been done by Dorset Buttons, although to be accurate I don't know if it was ever played 'on the street' but certainly in sessions afterwards.

PS.  I don't play for them, so no promo going on.

I have a friend who collects that kinda stuff. I think his worst is 'Foster & Allen's Greatest Hits... for Panpipes'. *shudders*

oh..my...god... :o  ;D

I honestly can't think of a popular music arrangment that I would consider good or that undeniably added something or put a genuinely interesting new spin on the source material. Even superb musicians that I otherwise admire have made me cringe with their efforts. James Galway really cheapened his legacy as one of the greatest classical flautists of the 20th century with his extensive oeuvre of elevator music and Eric Roche, a justly revered figure in modern fingerstyle guitar who died tragically young, wasted a great deal of his time and talent with cheesey solo arrangments of popular tunes, (if I said that to a bunch of guitar nerds I'd probably be killed).

I'm having trouble believing not just that this jig is original to Status Quo, but that it only dates back to 1988, because it's very thoroughly lodged in my hindbrain. Anyway. YouTube has a jolly nice version by the Bursledon Village Band, and apparently Muse play it regularly at their live gigs.

Edit It's not so much insomnia as a blind refusal to sleep. At any rate; it's a song called Darby Kelly and was in the 'National Songbook': words and music online It was then picked up by the BBC's 'Singing Together' which is almost certainly where I got it from. Well done to Status Quo though for liberating the tune from its rather dull words. And, to be fair, putting it back together with some different dull words. But at least the tune has a chance to shine.

Anyone at Whitby in the last couple of years would have had the opportunity to go to a themed ceilidh.  Last year it was Abba, year before it was Beatles (or maybe it was the other way round).  The idea seems to seems to have come from Eliza Carthy, and both had Matt Quinn playing lead on a Hohner Corona.   I went to them, but was disappointed because of one huge omission - hardly any vocals.  How can you have Beatles or Abba without all the fantastic vocals?    I think it could have worked brilliantly if the mix had included a version of the original vocal harmonies,  but just instruments playing melody, with a big rhythm section behind them I found dull, even with Mr Quinn jr. giving his best.

Theo, you sort of just touched a raw nerve with me when you mentioned harmonies. Why is it that when you usually get a group of melodeon players together, in sessions or as a band for morris - everyone plays in unison ? You could play chords (rhythm melodeon  ::) ) or a counter melody.

I know Bananarama got away with it, but Beatles, Beach Boys or Abba with no harmonies.....

Burning Bridges - Status Quo

I have alway been suprised that no morris side has picked up and run with the excellent jig in the middle of Burning Bridges, by Quo.

I've heard it played in sessions, and given a different title. I can't remember the name or find it now, and what Status Quo played has to be edited a bit to make it fit into a 32 bar format. After hearing it in the wild, I wondered if it was a trad tune that they had picked up and decided to use in the song.

(Edit) OK - now I see Alison's nailed it a few messages back. Should have read the thread more carefully  :|bl

I think I could do that...thing is it sounds a bit boring without a singer.

Although SNA could be a track for Al according to wikipedia
"According to White, "Seven Nation Army" is what he used to call the Salvation Army as a child."
