Midi keyboards v acoustic boxes.

MIDI or Acoustic

I just found an interesting video on You Tube, with a talented guy playing a set of jigs on a keyboard, I have my own opinions of what he's produced - but see what you think.

A lot of English PA players could benefit from learning to play like that.

I'd love to hear him on a Piano Accordeon rather than the keyboard.

Remarkable skill.  Really picks his fingers up (ref Anahata / PA players)  but!, there was something not quite right.  I think it was the too regular bump in the bass, or lack of syncopation in the accompaniment.

The electronic accompaniment sound part is a bit distracting but he definitely has great talent!
I much prefer to see young people play this kind of music than death thrash metal...
Thumbs up!

And now on accordeon

This 16 year old accordeon player with the same tunes, I prefer the real sound any time..

As you earlier post, it's great that the youngsters are playing this music.  I felt more relaxed with the accordion piece, even though it was played with more notes in it, it didn't sound rushed.

Bottom line is, traditional music lives! I much prefer 'mechanical' instruments with natural sound but as long as the new generations keep carrying the musical heritage they will always get my encouragement and support.

I totally agree - and also as a parent of teenagers I'm very aware that just every now and then I needs must venture outta my cave and feel the sun on my face (even though I don't really like it as it's horrible shiny stuff that hurts my eyes and burns my skin). Thing is, each time I do venture out of my little musical cavern I find that I'm amazed and really impressed with what so many youngsters are achieving musically these days. All of my 4 children are far and away better musicians than I will ever be (and that starts with my youngest 7 year old daughter who is a better pianist and keyboard player than I have ever been). And my teenage son uses Irish & Scots fiddle tunes just to warm up on when he plays his electric guitar - which he does at lightening speed. He claims they help him with some of the solos that he needs to play in his Heavy Metal Rock Band. So traditional music is alive - it's just living in a slightly different way I think.

The question I really raised was, given two great performances of the same tune - played with skill and feeling, which sounds the better to your ears the electronic keyboard or the natural accordeon.

I agree it great to see young musicians though..

I had to stop the electronic version just as he slid into the second tune. Skill yes. But feeling? I didn't discern any in the first tune. It sounded outstandingly unmusical to me - no lilt at all.

Without doubt, to my ears, the keyboard was a much better musical interpretation (the keyboard piece also included another jig as well, so like for like comparison runs into difficulties there) - RS certainly played with greater feeling, and used volume and tempo wisely. The young laddie on the piano accordion belted two of the jigs out alright, but musically the keyboard interpretation is the one I'd much rather listen to frankly. But they're two different species playing similar repertoire...so you pays your money... :D

I too have a problem with electronic accompaniments and percussions... I think we are in presence of (at least) two things:
- Musical technique (i.e. playing the notes of a tune on a given instrument)
- Musical expression

The kid on the piano accordion seems to have both! Yet RS uses his electronic gizmo to add some 'expression'.
