if I mess up with a box I can't afford to go out and buy a new one.
???
Methinks you exaggerate just a little. Adjusting the LH strap is just about the least risky thing you can do on a melodeon. Why not just try it? Take a chance - just for once.

Look here. If I take a pen apart when I put it back together it stops working. And that's pretty basic. Even at school for technology (despite choosing IT) always got put in 'construction' class. And everything I ever touched fell apart.
Okay...except when I made a ring out of copper (all the boys made screwdrivers, but being one of only a handful of girls in the class we got to make jewellery).

So you ended up with a green finger, when if you had stuck with the boys lesson you would have had a screwdriver which would have solved your problems now. But perhaps all is not lost, if you still have the copper ring wear it on your left hand until it goes all manky and infects your hand, which should swell up enough to get you out of trouble ;D

My cunning plan

:(
Unless I tightened it so I cut the blood circulation off my hand I'd still have the same problem. This way there's a barrier to stop my hand sliding up the melodeon which isn't some piece of sponge that will fall out.

@Theo. Bodge is my middle name. ;) :p

What you need is Lester's Wonderful Fix for Uncomfortable Hohner 1 Row 4 Stop Bass Ends  (LWFFUH1R4SBE). The actual spoon box bit it has ridge around it which I find uncomfortable so I cut a bit from a thin camping mat and filled in the hole, this makes it far more comfortable, and may well stop the hand slipping.

Photo Here

Also note the little rubber bump stops to stop spoons clattering on the box.

LdT will bring some on Friday if I can find it in the loft.

. . . which isn't some piece of sponge that will fall out.

You would put a wee dab of glue, or piece of double-sided tape, on it to stop that happening. ::)

Sarah, it really isn't complicated to poke holes in the strap and re-screw  ::) But failing that, as someone mentioned earlier, a sports wristband (a la Saul Rose, as Kay likes it!) is an easy solution - I keep one in my case for later on in sessions when the hand starts top slip. A wondrous invention!

But it would have to go round my hand not my wrist?

Again I will say doesn't matter on tightness of strap my hand will still move up. *sigh*

Yes, around your hand above the thumb. As well as filling the space, it also increases the friction a great deal, so it helps in two ways.

Be vary careful with tape on the ends. Apart from sticky residues when removed it can pull the finish off. The textured ends of the hohner one rows are quite frail.

I'm glad you said this, Mike. It was my first thought when I saw LDT's photos, but it's better coming from someone else.

Sarah, PLEASE very carefully remove that nasty sticky tape as soon as possible. It looks horrible and as Mike has said, it is likely to damage the finish on the instrument. The longer it is left on, the worse the potential for damage is. Then just get on and tighten the strap in the proper way by removing the screws, making two new holes in the leather strap and refixing the screws. Please. Just like Ellie has said, it really isn't hard or complicated.

Hi Sarah

There is of course a "neither tools nor tape"  non modification remedy!

If playing your 4 stop melodeon in the standing position, place your right foot on a small box/ melodeon case. Now jam the treble end against the inner right thigh and tilt your melodeon away from you by some degrees. The right hand end is now firmly held in position with none of that annoying waggling about and  with the box no longer vertical, the gravity problem goes away.

If playing in the seated position, repeat the operation by deploying a smaller box to raise the right leg a bit or, by what ever means you wish, lowering the left leg, thus creating a differential.

I adopt both of these two methods when playing my 4 stops, using the sitting down version in preferrence. I hate playing it standing up. Also standing up runs the risk of me doing Dad dancing whilst playing, from the sight of which the public should be spared.

A good alternative to socks is wrist sweat bands, available cheaply from sports shops; I use them with my Liliput which doesn't have an adjustable strap.

Yup. Tennis wristband works on my club, which has a very roomy hand strap. A little bit of padding goes a long way and seems to offer more support.

I'm eventually going to get a better strap to replace it because it is quite old and nasty, so I haven't bothered repositioning it. The repositioning itself is a very simple procedure (take screws out, drill new holes, put screws back in).

A pair of these and a bit of sticky back velcro would do the trick, with the added advantage of an uncritical audience when you play. ;D
