Great Derek, thanks for the videos, keep them coming. A video on "how not to Um pah" would be really useful for me  ;D
All I need now is a D/G :|||:

Thanks Derek,

When you slow it down like that, you can still hear your distinctive style but now we can see some of 'how it's done'. That is really REALLY useful. More please ::)

Thanks Again

Nice, thanks. I have been trying for more interesting basses to keep things fresh.

Some of us are still having trouble with "Um Pah!".  ???

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

thats the point ... don't do Um Pah!
I was advised by melodeon player Dave Williams of Berkshire! ..... learn across the rows from the very beginning! ... It will pay back in the end!
He was right!!!

That's what I've tried to do from the start. Tough going at times though, especially if you're a bit heavy handed on the bass end!

Very nice, Derek, it's always enjoyable to watch someone so much at ease with his instrument.

But I thought those cheesy little chromatic runs from B to D (sliding through cNat and c# on the way) were an exclusive C#/D trademark. Did you copy them off Jackie Daly, as I did?  ;D

Thanks for your offerings Derek, they are really quite helpful. Especially when one is trying to climb out of the rut on the bass end! Cheers..................jwf  :||:

??? I think I was doing these within 3-4 tunes of starting (without knowing how or why). Tunes like Jenny Lind seem to play them automatically as the tone centre drops back into G from D. They's sort of built into the D/G box. Amazed you can get this effect on a C#/D!  >:E

Back to the vids - and once again I was amazed just how well Derek's are put together. A true service to melodeonism and a great demo of how fingers (ie cross rowing) can move more fluently than trying to do it with the left arm.  Another thanks from me.

[edit] Hi Anahata - I was deeply into Dan Quinn at the time - probably got it from him

I'm sure I've heard JK1 and possibly Dan Quinn do similar on no more than a D/G pokerwork, and you can do it in thirds too, if you have a B flat accidental in the usual place.

[1]think of the first 4 notes of "Dummy Head"...

Chris, I'm sure they are a good deal easier on C#/D than on D/G - as you could probably ascertain had you not doctored your C# row!

I'm talking about the B-Cnat-C#-D sequences Derek does in the second part of the tune. On C#/D, you play B on the pull (on the D row of course), slide your finger across to play C-nat on the pull on the outer row, then pull C# on the D row before changing direction to sound D. You can very easily do this so fast that the cheese factor is barely discernible. (Well, that's what I kid myself anyway.  ;) )

The other week I was showing my C#/D class how to (but not to) cheesify Sweet Jenny Jones with this move and had to figure it out for my one D/G student, discovering that it was perfectly doable, but not quite so obvious. I'm surprised you found it by accident soon after starting.

Works quite nicely at the beginning of Cock of the North too. And Trunkles...

Derek,
Thanks for putting up these instructional videos.  I'm keen to see the one on simple ornamentation, but it doesn't seem to be working (for me, at least).  I have one instructional DVD that is quite good for ornaments, but it's better to listen to someone play for a while then have them parce out what they're doing.  Also, I'm a fan of your youtube channel.
thanks,
John

1. Wholehearted 'thanks' from me too, very useful, just need to go away and digest it all!

2.  The 'Interesting' video - a classic example of " it's not what tune you play, but *how well* it's played".

Well done!
