As someone who is reasonably able to read dots and wants to develop that skill can anyone suggest some hints/ tips about how to count the rhythm.
Thanks

Almo, I've enjoyed your postings on totm, so hope you do give it a go  ::)...even if it's not your cup of tea !

I'm really looking forward to learning this tune. Is it ever played in G (I suppose it would be possible if played in the lower sound reed settings) ???

I'm looking forward to hearing you play it!
If played higher in G it would go to a high D that some fiddlers I know would view as uncharted territory, so it wouldn't be popular in our local session.
There's a version of it called the Comet Waltz in the William Clarke ms. and that's in D too, and some of the other Clarke tunes go to stratospheric heights so high pitch wasn't a problem for him. (we think he was a flute player.)
I could play it in a low-octave G on my box - might sound interesting. But I'm already used to playing it in D, and that's what I'll stick to.

Sandy,
As posted elsewhere on this thread there are ABC versions of the tune in both D and C, from the source Joshua Gibbons manuscript (the Lincolnshire Collection). The original version is stated as being in C. I normally play this tune in C on a C/G anglo concertina, but it also goes brilliantly in C on a G/C melodeon, using the inside row as the home row. So this would equate to playing in G on a D/G box, or F on a C/F box.

I am more and more of the opinion that for playing solo, it doesn't really matter which key you play a tune in, other than the most effective for your particular instrument. Here, 'effective' can mean fluency of playing/fingering, overall sound, etc. So yes, no need to agonise - go ahead and play it in G on a D/G box, with the low octave reed switched in if you like, to tone down any squeakiness.

..for some reason every time I try to add basses it turns from a cheshire waltz to a cheshire jig as I progress through the tune.

It was John Kirkpatrick who first pointed out to me that you can slow down a jig to make a waltz, and vice-versa, so you are in very good company!

it also goes brilliantly in C on a G/C melodeon
I was wondering about trying that too.

Ha, I never realised why the tune seemed so familiar! Mind you, there's also a bit of syncopation going on in Rope Waltz, isn't there?

'Off She Goes' would make quite a smoochy waltz, wouldn't it?  Dancers would just love the 9/8 bits in the B music!

Well, I did post the ABC in C, so not impossible. I worked at it last night, but just don't have it yet. At the end of the night I recorded another waltz, just to feel as if I'd gotten something accomplished.

Funnily enough, I was just trying it out as you wrote, and yep, it does work!  But if I do manage to post it, I think it better be a new thread!

Well...here we go - here's my attempt at the tune which I'd heard but never played before it came up as a candidate for TOTM. I used 3 different treble voices with a bit of clunky change between each - I couldn't manage the bass side or I'd have played at least one with the bottom reed out on the LH one time through. :||:

Thank you LDT - choose any of the somewhat varied chord choices (not all intended!) you like the sound of.  ;D
