What a lovely rendition of this waltz.  It flows so beautifully.  What is the box you are playing it on?

Thank you.
Oakwood D/G two voice. I think it's what they used to call the model 3, but that's academic as they aren't made anymore :(

My contribution: Cheshire Waltz

No fancy buildups, just the fixed set of voices available, but I threw in a bit of RH harmony 2nd time round.

Beautiful ...
Thanks.
I'm working hard to learn it  ;)
Maybe I'll risk to record a video of this tune.

I transcribed the Spiers and Boden version some time ago, the differences are small but significant.

I've converted both to dots, and as said, there's a variation, but if you're playing it then it's 'your' version that counts.
I like Lester's original version.
Is the Spiers Boden version more commonly played at sessions, simply because people learn it by ear?

I enjoyed learning this one - some interesting harmony potential.
I thought I'd post an early version with the intention of improving on it through the month.
Here is is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VokPsYxjzc8

No significant variations just yet, but that's my mission during the month.

@Zubz
Very nice.  Really give it a lighter spirit than I've heard before.  Not just the pace, which seems a bit faster, but the ease on the bass.  I like that quick waltz feel.  Thanks.

Almo, I've enjoyed your postings on totm, so hope you do give it a go  ::)...even if it's not your cup of tea !

Sandy, we'll all just have to post such ravishing renditions of the tune that Al won't be able to resist  >:E :||: :|||:
(also enjoying a late night glass of wine...)  :|glug

Hi Both,
Your tactics have worked Anahata - I loved your version so much that I can't get it out of my head now - so superior to the Spires and Boden version which sound messy to me by comparison to your playing.

I have spent the last two or three hours playing along with you and watching your bass side with interest - it's finally sinking in and I'm having a break cos me fingers are aching...I could do with a glass of wine now too - but it's only about 2pm..

Thanks again for posting...and the challange , and the inspiration..

I think I'm ok with the great bass that Anahata is using - but Ukbert is really outstanding too..It's certainly interesting trying to work out the bass line though..

My bass line or Anahata's? They are pretty similar I think, except that he goes to a B where I don't, which sounds very nice. I just played the first line that came into my head. The only thing that makes it sounds good is the rhythm, which rather than oom-pah-pah" is "ooh-pah [and-an]...". e.g. I'll play D bass (crotchet), D chord (crotchet), D chord (quaver) A chord (quaver), or perhaps A bass (crotchet), A chord (crotchet), A chord (quaver) A bass (quaver) if that makes any sense. It gives a nice lift to waltzes and is one of the few tricks I've developed for dealing with them, I still don't consider myself to be able to play them particularly well. The same rhythm can be adapted to most tunes though (i.e. oom-[pah-and] for a reel).

Here's an attempt at a bar-by bar guided tour. (I've never done this before)
Each line describes 1 bar as follows:
ABC notation | bass info : treble and bellows comments
bass: caps for bass notes, lower case for chords.
Generally bass note is sustained and legato, while chords are quite short and sharp.
Key: D on a D/G box with B minor chords

A
f2 fg fe   |  D d d : use G row for smoothness on the G
d2 de dc |  B bmin bmin (use D chord if you have B major chords)
B2 c2 d2 |  G - g : first note is on G row
A4 f2      |  D d d : I use G row and pull for 1st note to get some air into the bellows. YMMV
g2 f2 e2  |  E emin emin : all on pull, f# on G row
b2 a2 c2 |  A a a : all on pull
e2 d2 d2 |  A d d : draw 1st  note out, make other two quite staccato
1 d4 A2  |   D d A  (hold D bass into chord), note A bass :  last note on pull/G row
2 d4 g2  | bass Dd  A (D bass and chord together) :

B
f2 af ed  | D d a :
c2 e2 g2 | A a a :
fe dB AF | D d d : (I'm undecided about which variant to play here, and mix two randomly)
D2 F2 A2 | D d d :
G2 B2 f2 | G B (hold G for 2 beats) : Push, 1st two notes on G row, 3rd on D row
g2 e2 d2 | EE bmin :
c2 ed cB | A a E (hold on the last E) :
A4 A2     | AA a :
(next 4 bars are a repeat of  end of A music)

C
AG          | A : both notes on pull, D row G row
F2 A2 d2 | D d d :
d2 c2 B2 | D - G : last beat is push/G row
c2 e2 a2 | A a a : last note on G row
g4 f2     | G g D  : all on G row
g3 f g2   | G g g : all on G row (keep middle LH chord short!)
B2 e2 d2 | E emin bmin : D row
1 c2 d2 B2 | A - E :
A4 Ag    | A a A :
2 dc BA Bc | D a a :
D4         | Dd :

I didn't have my box with me while I did this, so it's not necessarily accurate, but it might be useful to someone anyway.

I love your version of this Anahata, it is ringing inside my head. I had never heard this tune before and am trying to learn it by ear from your video. I am so inclined to get stuck on the black dots and think your advice to LDT (I think) to learn by ear is very sound.

I wouldn't recommend purely working your way through the chart I posted above. For one thing, it may not be accurate to what I played; for another, you might think of something different and better.

The intention was that if you are trying to learn it or pick up ideas from my video and you get stuck at some point,  you could refer to the appropriate point in the chart to get a hint.

I think I'd better confess that there's a point somewhere (in the B music, I think) where I played an ugly wrong note in the bass and fixed it by editing, a process that's easy if you record the sound separately from the video.
If you watch carefully you'll see me hitting an E bass and hear an A coming out  :o  :|bl

This is really very helpful though. I seem to recall that Clive did a similar blow-by-blow tutorial on a previous tune of the month and I wonder whether we could actually have a bit of the site somewhere that links to 'videos of tunes and the post that tells you exactly how those effects were pulled together'.

What do people think?
