Simple Irish tunes for 1 row
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:08:50 PM »

I've been asked to play a tune or two for an Irish friend of the family on his grandfather's old box. I don't actually know that many Irish tunes and those I do know are still a little beyond my capability on melodeon. Can anyone point me in the direction of a couple of nice, simple Irish tunes please?

One day I'll get really good, like those really good players. One day.

Hornpipes in D spring to mind, Soldier's Joy and Boys of Bluehill work great on a one row.  Any thing that doesn't need the second note below the key note (ie E if it's G major) will also work, I learnt Madam Bonaparte on a one row.

Yes,  some simple Irish waltz tunes might be the thing. 'Mountains of Mourne', 'Cockles and Mussels(Molly Molone)' Irish Jaunting Car', even 'Irish Eyes are Smiling'
Let us know how you do.

Dennis Murphy's and Bill Sullivan's work out nicely.  You can play Sullivan's in a different key pretty easily on a one-row, which mixes things up a bit for the listener.  It falls nicely under the fingers in A on a D box.

The Home Ruler. A D hornpipe. You have to start it pulled way out. Learn lots about air control with this one.

you can't go wrong with Kesh jig --

can be found in this set from BBC virtual session: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/sessions/swf/02.html

might need to change the key - but I believe these can all be played on one row - kesh for sure can - was one of the first tunes I learned on my first toy one row melodeon.

Cook in the Kitchen, Off the California, but if you want a real simple tune take a look at The Dawning of the Day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xSCKBBje8A&feature=related

Here is the ABC, which has little to do with the PA version above.
X: 1
T: Dawning Of The Day, The
M: 2/4
L: 1/8
R: polka
K: Dmaj
D2E2 |F4 F4 F4 E2F2 |A4 A4 B4 A2F2 |D4 E4 D4 D4 |D12 A4 |B6 A2 [C,,,,,12B4] d4 |F6 E2 D4 F4 |A4 F4 d4 F4 |E12 A4 |B6 A2 B4 d4 |F6 E2 D4 F4 |A4 F4 d4 F4 |E12 D2E2 |F4 F4 F4 E2F2 |A4 A4 B4 A2F2 |D4 F4 E4 D4 D4 z8 |D12 z4 |]

It can be played as a slow air, a march or a polka.

You'll be able to a whole evening soon!  My suggestion is Maggie In The Woods.
Egan's Polka is also simple and will fit.

Among others, Saltarelle Pastourelle II D/G; Hohner 4-stop 1-rows in C & G; assorted Hohners; 3-voice German (?) G/C of uncertain parentage; lovely little Hlavacek 1-row Heligonka; B♭/E♭ Koch. Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

You can also play E minor/dorian tunes on a D one row very effectively. The basses won't work at all, so omit them altogether.

You're right Steve it should be an air I've removed it - sorry about that I copied the ABC from the Session site without checking - this should be correct:-

LOL, Gromit, I should have guessed. Jeremy at the session doesn't see the problem with having to make every 3/4 tune a waltz. I had a discussion with him about this - cripes, about a decade ago - after submitting the tune "Mr. O'Connor" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/400 - see the comments section.)

Steve

Jeremy probably doesn't read melodeon.net or chiffandfipple.org for that matter.

I put in a post the otehr day and mentioned it was crss posted, it was gone in little more than 20 minutes.

I love TheSession dearly, but that tunes database is something else. Great resource if taken with a grain of salt. But if a poster makes one mistake, it is memorialized forever...and God forbid a tune shares a name with another. >:E

I had a wonderful time in Galway at Johnny Connolly's club - absolutely solid play on 1 row

You won't go wrong buying his CD (though the tunes might come "with time"  ;)

The Hullichan jig  needs only 4 buttons worth & sounds like its using a lot more. Smash the windows (Roaring Jelly)  goes well with it and requires only 5 buttonsworth.  Both sound good played at a nice steady  rhythmic pace rather than the   "shit off a shovel"   speed  so loved by some!

Haste to the wedding is a very well known and liked Irish tune.

It's also fairly easy to play on one row.

When I played Irish music a lot, I always preferred that Clare/Galway style.  The Jack and Charlie Coen are still favorites of mine.  That's a great video.

Back in the days when Ceili and Old Time dancing was big business in Ireland I played with a ceili band and one particular Old time or old fashion Waltz selection we played consisted of the Irish Airs - Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin Ní Chearbhaill/The Munster Cloak and ar Eirinn ni neosfainn ce hi.  All lovely slow airs in their own right  but all worked well as waltzes.  Then again we also played La Paloma as a waltz and that worked well too. You have to be adventurous.  Have a listen to the great French accordionst Emile Vacher playing Drigo's Serenade as an old fashion waltz.  I rest my case. ;)
