Anyone ever removed bass buttons from PA mechanism...?
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:29:26 PM »

Am about to replace 24 bass buttons from the Hohner Carmen that I'm renovating as the current bass buttons are pretty chewed up. Anyone ever done this before/got any advice as to how to do this?
Thanks

Most Hohners have the bass machine built as a unit or two units, one for chords, one for bass.  There are screws(or clips) at each end, undo these and the whole bass machine lifts out complete with buttons sometimes complete with the button board.  That should give you better access.  Its certainly great for the occasions when a spring needs replacing, unlike most Italian basses which have to be stripped down piece by piece.

Yep going to lift out the bass mechanism - comes out in 2 sections as you describe - am going to try removing the old buttons by heating up the metal button arms which I'm hoping will release the old buttons enough to allow me to pull off the buttons? What do you think?

A simpler method is just to crush the buttons with a strong pair of pliers, or side cutters.   Protect your eyes if using this method because bits of button can go flying.

Dunnit! It worked a real treat - after removing the mechanism and using a very small blow torch to heat up the rods I was able to simply slide the old buttons off with a gentle tug using a pair of pliars with one hand whilst holding the rod to prevent bending the metal. Works a treat - I recommend the method. Took me all of about 30 mins to take off the old buttons and replace with beautiful new pearl-white buttons from Charlie Marshall (£12 the lot for 24 bass)!
