There are some great Morris tunes that can be played 'differently', I did my version of Princess Royal some time back.

Almo's video illustrates perfectly the point I made earlier about the validity of playing Morris tunes in sessions at speeds that would be inappropriate when playing for dancers. His is a very good rendition and perfectly appropriate for a session, but I don't think any dancer would want to dance it at that speed.

Anahata's points about sessions are well made. A session that is sensitive to inexperienced players and those lacking confidence should encourage them by playing tunes they start at the speed at which they start them or by helping them to slow down if they have started too fast due to nervousness. Another way of supporting inexperienced or nervous players is to ask them quietly if there are tunes that they play at home but are not confident enough to start in the session. Starting and leading those tunes for them so that they have the opportunity to play them in a session environment will bring closer the day when they will feel confident enough to start those tunes themselves.

I wouldn't play Princess Royal that way in a session if I knew others were joining in, I'd keep it 'lively' but a lot simpler - it's different when you play on your own.

I totally agree with Anahata' comments too - there is a place for all skill levels. At a lot of sessions I have played at, there is usually some break in the evening where players can chat about tunes and swap ideas and ask for guidence if they need it - most players will be happy to help less experienced musicians where they can.

I'd like to challenge Derek to spice up 'Soliders Joy' one of my least favourite tunes.....

I can't stand the tune either!... so i've done an experiment! ;D ... A '1 take' recording of the tune i remember with the first variations that come into my head (then never play the tune ever again!)... so the usual over chording, over complicated, over ornamented mushy stuff i usually do! >:E

Having challenged Derek to spice up Soldier's Joy and him doing such a great job, I thought I'd better have a go.

Just recorded this today and uploaded to MySpace - it confirmed my thoughts about the audio quality on MySpace - it made me sound like I'm playing through a phazer....
oh well - you can still hear me anyway....
