Theme of the Month for April 2011 - Wedding Tunes
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:02:32 AM »

Well, it was inevitable, wasn't it? There's a party in London later this month, and in honour/acceptance of it, this month the theme is Wedding Tunes.

Please feel free to interpret this as loosely as you like; traditional wedding music, music you like to play at wedding ceilidhs, disco hits 'guaranteed to fill the dance floor', or even music that is *completely* unrelated but you happen to associate it with a wedding you've been to or in (tell us the story though, won't you?)

Ding dong etc,

Clive

Well lets get this out of the way then I can concentrate on the LNB Polka

This is a Swedish Brides March. Wedding has to start with that.

Think I posted this as a Scandinavian tune some time ago. Whatever.

Hello Chas, t'was more than justice done to this sentimental piece. and lots of music coming out of that 75 euros. By the way you wouldn't be related to that other feller with the hat?
Striking resemblance. Maybe a Cousin? :0)

Here's a couple of tunes. Kitty's Wedding - heard at a recent music session and A Bonny Lass to Marry Me, which appears in the Browne collection from Troutbeck, Westmorland and the Winder collection from North Lancs and is included in The Furness Tradition Tune Book.   Played on my D/G Saltarelle L'Elfique with the low voice taken out on the treble side. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLlmM1MX3yI These tunes were quite different from the ones I've normally learnt and played in the past, in that both are probably Celtic in origin (one Irish and one Scottish?) rather than English. There were a couple of dotted notes in the book for the second tune but since there were none in the first tune I decided to play them 'straight'.

I liked your tunes Mcgrooger.  I have never heard them before but I always like hearing Lakeland tunes as that is where I was born and I often go to sessions in Eskdale and Wasdale when I go home.

Bill, your set reminded me of this recording which I did at a workshop with Saul Rose a few years ago and I thought you may like to hear it. Not to illustrate my prowess but as a tribute to a great box player, Saul Rose, who made even me sound quite good  (:)

Lovely! I really do like this Scandinavian Brudmarsch stuff; in fact so much, here's another one, but a modern one written by wonderful Norwegian box player, Ingunn Bjorgo. I wouldn't have discovered her music if it wasn't for Spotify, and there's lots of her stuff on there, solo, and with her band Askerladden, who recorded this tune, simply called "I Do".

Played on a Castagnari Mory in D/G with unisonoric basses in full flow, and recorded using a different setup this month, so no pretty pictures of me playing this time. That may return next month!

Cheers,

Clive

Lovely stuff as always Clive (:) I love Ingunn Bjorgo, I've enjoyed her music so much on Spotify that I'm probably going to actually pay for it ;)

The Crystal Wedding, by Brian Peters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD6B7EfVkAQ

Written for his wife Margaret on their 15th wedding anniversary. I've always liked this tune since I first heard him play it at Islington folk club over 10 years ago, so this seemed a good opportunity to learn it properly (FSVO "properly").
From Brian's book Rattle and Roll, which is full of good tunes.

I had the Pokerwork in the studio for another project (it normally lives in the car as a spare box), so on a whim I thought I'd use it for this video. It's the first time I've used it for a public YouTube video, and actually I think its rich tremolo suits this rather sentimental tune quite well.

Hello to all
Great web site! This is my first post and attempt at a couple of tunes. Started playing two years ago  (melodeon newbie).
Hopefully it's ok.

Half learnt this a short while ago but didn't want to play it at a ceilidh.. Revisited it today (in panic mode) as I need to play it on Saturday.

Think it's a bit slow though  ???

I like jigs played at a leisurely pace like that.
It's got a splendidly bouncy rhythm and could have a floor full of dancers really getting off their feet.
What more could you want?

I agree. As I said on facebook, it could go a touch faster than that for a ceilidh, but only a touch! You want to keep the dancers skipping, if you play too fast then they start walking and then bad things happen, because they then think it too slow and after a while your fingers whirl off into the distance. I've learned my lesson for playing too fast for ceilidhs! :P
