What's this tune?
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:20:22 PM »

The tune for this dance by Mortimers Morris is fantastic but it's a bit fast for me to try and work out how to play it. Since I don't know the name of it nor can I punch in the the first few notes to a tune finder, I thought I'd come here to see if anyone knows it.

So, what's it called and does anyone have the dots/ABC?

One day I'll get really good, like those really good players. One day.

Mortimers Morris always seem an oddity to me.

Their style is English - Northwest Clog - but danced to French tunes.
Good dancing and good tunes though...

My good lady wife used to dance / play for Ripley Green Garters - Northwest Clog side from Ripley, Derbyshire.

Ah, but is it French. It may well be, but I first heard it paired with Begvningsmarsch fran Funsdalen and it was not called Cochin Chine, but Den Toppede Hone. So it might be Scandinavian in origin.

When I first heard this tune many, many many years ago it was called Cochin China, but I also have it in a book of Danish tunes and a book of Scandinavian dances - neither of which I can put my hand on at this minute so I couldn't tell you what their titles are.  It does, however, sound far more Scandinavian than French in style to me.  I presume "Den Toppede Hone" is "The Tappit Hen".

Try this link for notation / ABC / midi

http://abcnotation.com/searchTunes?q=Cochin+Chine&f=c&o=a&s=0

There are still French sessions at Ockbrook, Derby - and their webpage gives links to some of the tune which are played there..

I dug out the book of Danish tunes (bought in a music shop in Copenhagen) and the tune is listed in there as ......yes, "Den Toppede Høne".

True that french people dance Cochinchine. It's great fun, see below the way we dance it :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kojw9n_iSdM
I was told it was popular after WW1 because only one man was required for 2 women (there were  few men left at this period) ...
I was also told that french britton sailors brought this dance from Cochinchine (a part of Cambodge) ..
I was also told it was from Denmark  ...
And now I'm told that it's a variety of big hens  .. marvelous coming here, isn't it ?

That's aka the Birdie Dance, isn't it?

Not to be confused with The Chicken Song: "Hold a chicken in the air, stick a deckchair up your nose .."

Sorry, I know some of you will hate me now because you'll have that tune stuck in your head. Go and play something tasteful on your melodeon, to rinse it away.
