Karen Tweed at the Granary
« on: April 03, 2011, 07:39:40 PM »

Hey folks,

I'm learning the first tune Karen Tweed plays here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9-Pd6zW_Q4&feature=related
on my B/C. It's (not easy but) VERY fun to play!

Can anyone recognize it? Has anyone heard it on a Melodeon somewhere in the deep spaces
of youtube? :)

Many thanks!

Some variation on the Redesdale Hornpipe I think - it's attributed to the Northumbrian Fiddler James Hill, which would make sense.

Hmm.. If that's the case then I really like her interpretation of this tune. She really gives it a "funky" feeling.

The tune is Joe Skelton's (Hornpipe), as on page 39 of Karen's 1994 book of "Traditional Irish Music - Karen Tweed's Irish Choice".

Edit - Also worth noting from The Session: "Joe Skelton's Hornpipe" appears to be a rendition of the old hornpipe "The Locomotive" which I think was composed by James Hill in the 19th Century. (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5382), but it's not the same "Joe Skelton's" on Wallop the Spot, which is a reel.

Spot on! I couldn't find references to Joe Skelton's anywhere, but it seems "The Locomotive" is the right one!

Thanks!

It's remarkably similar to the Redesdale - James Hill recycling himself again!

You can hear Joe Skelton himself playing the Locomotive here, complete with transcription.
