We at Devil's Dyke also use the tune; a similar story I think. Here it is (played too fast :P) at our 2009 Ale - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAiRZn6c6mk&playnext=1&list=PL0C31C9293163A299  :M

It's been on telly too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3q0FmHb4FQ Dogrose dancing the Oddington version.

Hmm, well I have watched the East Suffolk Morris Men, Dogrose and the Pride and Prej version, and if someone hadn't told me that these were all the same tune, I would never have made the connection (so much for my determination to learn tunes 'by ear')!!!  I think I will go with the university blokes version, it looks relatively simple

The East Suffolk and Dogrose videos are of Skirmish by Nick Barber. The Pride and Prejudice clip is of Mrs B's Maggot.

Though, interestingly, we (at Devil's Dyke) were convinced for years that Skirmish was called Nick's Maggot, but it's an entirely different tune (which rather puts pay to our rather long introduction to the dance!).

Ah, well that explains it to some degree. I think a problem with me is watching something as well as listening, if I just listened to the tunes without an image I might find it easier to pick them up.

Anyway it's the Ash Grove this month so I needn't worry about it and, amazingly, I know this tune, though a rather ribald version. I won't sing along though  >:E

I was wondering whether to reverse the G row accidentals on both my D/G melodeons to make Mr Beveridge's Maggot play better. It would make some other tunes work better too, but would no doubt no doubt cause all sorts of other unforeseen trouble.

Now it's a more difficult decision... ???

What about just swapping on one box to see how it goes?

Well it's a bit like that gag where a country decides to change over from driving on the left of the road to driving on the right. So the plan is:
On the appointed day all the cars swap over to the other side of the road.
If all goes well, a week later all the buses and lorries swap over too...

Of course, what will happen is I will do one box at a time anyway. Maybe the Saltarelle which has a low D#/Fnat as well as a high one, so I could do a proper Mr.B in Eminor, and as I don't use it so much it wouldn't do too much damage. But the Salterelle is a 2.5 row box so the accidentals are all in different places anyway.

I also know someone who has a Lilly with reversed accidentals (and I don't think she plays it much), so I could ask to borrow it for a while to cross-train myself...
(erm, apologies for thread drift...)

My D sharp is on the push....I think my brain an handle it better because the D natural is on the push too.
(even more drift...on the fiddle I can't decide if I should play the E on open string or attempt using fourth finger?)

I did this years ago and I have never ever looked back. On the chin end of my G-row, I have D# on the push and F-natural on the pull. It is a modification I now make, or specify, on all my boxes, if they're not already like that. As you say, it makes playing Mr Beveridge's Maggot much more fulfilling, as you can have a nice LH chord of B major on the push to go with the RH push D# accidental. There are other tunes it works nicely with too. 'Staines Morris' comes to mind immediately, but there are others, some of the Welsh minor key tunes - perhaps Ffarwêl i'r Marian - anywhere where you are playing in Em and need the occasional B major chord.

The associated F-natural on the pull is fine too, and doesn't cause any problems. It works fine, say, for the B-music in 'Sir Sidney Smith's March'.  I can't think of an occasion when I have ever regretted not having F-nat on the push. It depends on what you are familiar with playing of course, but I don't think making the change to D#/F-nat would "cause all sorts of other unforeseen trouble".

A couple of years ago at Melodeons at Witney, Geert oude Weernink borrowed my Lilium for the Saturday concert just because it had D# on the push. (He needed a light, responsive two row in D/G at the time, in contrast to his usual heavier Mory). As far as I know, G/C instruments used on the continent are always set up in a similar fashion - the equivalent accidental would be G# push, Bb pull.

LDT 'likes' this. ;)

Oh, the irony...I've been trying to find a description of English style fiddle on a fiddle forum, then  get the explanation on melnet. lol!

I struggle with 4th finger....mine just won't stretch...even when I pull it with other hand to place it, I just get a horrible *crack* sound.  :o
