(even more drift...on the fiddle I can't decide if I should play the E on open string or attempt using fourth finger?)
You've been playing long enough to know that open strings on the violin are bad  >:E

If they're good enough for the Old Swan Band they are good enough for LDT  ;D

Fi Fraser who played in the Old Swan Band (amongst other things) doesn't do 'vibrato' and plays most things straight and calls it 'English style' - nowt wrong with that..

I'll be practicing with Fi tonight, in The Old Fashioned www.theoldfashioned.co.uk, she'll be be amazed to think that she's mentioned here.

Oh, the irony...I've been trying to find a description of English style fiddle on a fiddle forum, then  get the explanation on melnet. lol!

Easy - just take any other fiddle style from these islands - any of the various Scottish or Irish styles - remove any interesting features that might cause you to be accused of playing in or borrowing from those styles, and Bob's your uncle. >:E

It's a damned lie!  :o  Your aunt and I were just good friends around the time that you were born.

Since from your profile I gather you were about six years old at the time, Bob, I'll believe you - despite the fact that you do "protest too much".

And now, back to our usual programming.

Isn't that just typical...the English again trying to take the credit for Irish & Scots fiddle styles...well, well, some things just never change - the English hegemony continues apace... will the sun ever set ?

If you want English fiddle playing, look no further than John Dipper. His style sums up English fiddle playing for me perfectly. Other players include Jackie Oates, Chris Wood and Sam Sweeney (though he also has a lot of Scandinavian influences).
