A very late entry but it is, so far as I know, my first Quebecois tune.
Played on a 1 row "C" Zero Sette

Here's a tune I learned from a recording of Andre Marchand accompanied by Grey Larsen....the tune is called 'the Orange Tree', and it's very catchy, so it's another one I'm trying to get clear of my cluttered brain in order to make room for some new tunes. My disk space is diminishing daily ;D  Played on the Pistelli LMM in A/D.....the green one:

Can't see it I'm afraid - the video's private - can you tweak it to public?

Might as well post this here. I noted down a fragment of a Quebecois tune at Genticorum's workshop at Shepley and this is what I came out with when I got back. Turns out that the original tune isn't crooked at all, whereas I have a 5-4-3. Not quite sure what that's in aid of, but here it is anyway. WITH FEET. I am sitting on my dressing gown and am stepping into the flight case that I keep the two little boxes in. Rather surprised that the mic in my camera worked at all!

Another is this wonderful jig played by Alan Bouchard - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOef8pOVLO0&feature=related. Anyone know what it is called?

I'm sure I've heard Ed Rennie playing a version of this - perhaps on the last Bismarks CD?

You're not confusing it with The Champion, are you? First two bars are the same, and similar minor/major key change between A and B. Also recorded by the Committee Band.

Well, my attempts at fast Quebecois reels have (so far) gone very badly, so here instead is something rather more gentile; a gorgeous waltz written by Michel Faubert of Quebec, called La Valse des Jouets (The Waltz of the Toys).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJe2rmGIMVg

Played on the Hohner Preciosa (Bb/Eb) (again, what can I say, I *like* this instrument), and it comes out in Bb when I play it. It plays on the outer row of a 2 row 8 bass instrument; no clever reversals, accidentals or chords needed. This version owes a fair debt to how I remember Chris Wood and Andy Cutting playing it many years ago, before they recorded it on their 'Live at Sidmouth' album with a *completely* different arrangement (and a Danish guest guitarist if I remember correctly). Personally, I preferred their first arrangement, so here it is, more or less, and without the violin of course.

Clive

Have just re-recorded this on a G/C at popular request (well, *one* request), which you can find here:

Clive

Clive,
As the requester, I must say that this version is already quite popular with me. Thanks for the favor.

Clive, what keyboard layout on your G/C Hohner's left hand? I notice your index finger occasionally sneaking up to the button above the e/am chord and I wonder which bass note occupies that spot?

Ah, yes. The layout is standard 8 bass + 2 extra pairs of chords - they are (I think, trying to convert D/G speak to G/C speak in my head as I go)

F/F    Em/Am   Bm/Em
C/G      G/D      D/C

The note you're hearing is the Bm; I'm using that as a quick jumping chord in the middle, to bridge from a G chord to a C chord, much like I'd use the Em to bridge from a C chord to F chord transition if playing on the inside row.

Hmmm. That's probably not clear, is it? But it's just a passing note, and in no way essential to the tune; I can (and would) leave it out if I just had the 8 basses.

Cheers,

Clive

Despite hours of watching Clive's video and playing along till his arms dropped off, I found that I couldn't quite get the Clive rhythm machine going. How does he do that?

Even so, parts of the session may have stuck, because I feel that I made progress toward playing this as a tune http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FT8EYd4ZTI, rather than mechanically pressing the buttons. It may even be recognizable as a waltz and that would be a real step forward.

I tried to liberate my left, eschewing om, pah, pah, so there are strange combinations hiding between some left hand mistakes, which also added their own type of variety. Plus, I finally got to press my B chord in a tune, which is a first.

Thanks to Clive for posting his tune in G.

Rather late in the day for TOTM here's my first foray onto Soundcloud with The Sweetness of Mary. I am hoping it will be easier to concentrate on the sound if I only do audio - certainly found it less stressful!
