I play it on my octave mandola! And that's where it's going to stay - reading this lot has totally put me off even trying on the box for a LONG time!

Just for information. I wrote it in the top octave in E minor on my D/G box which is where I recorded it and play it with Chris Wood. With Blowzabella I play it in A minor in the bottom octave still on my DG box. It makes me very happy that so many people like and play this tune.

I tried to copy Andy Cutting's version  played with 'In Continental Mood'. This needs to be played in the upper octave to find the lower rh arpeggios in the B part  ??? (me thinks)
 (:)

I play these two tunes together as well, although I've never dared to give In Continental Mood a public airing. I play them on a G/C, ICM in C and Flatworld in Am, both in the upper octave.
I tried Flatworld in Am in the lower octave on a D/G, but found it rather fiddly and I could never remember it. It seems much more fluent in the upper octave, on the outside row.

I tried Flatworld in Am in the lower octave on a D/G

Doesn't that leave you missing a rather prominent low F natural?
Or maybe it's a 2.5 row box?
You still wouldn't have the right chords/basses...

Yes, it was a 2.5 row, and yes, the basses didn't work as well as playing it on the outside row.....

With Blowzabella I play it in A minor in the bottom octave still on my DG box.

....but that's how Andy plays it!

I play it in Bm on a D/G

That's different!

Hi Andy, I was wondering, is there a specific reason that you chose Em and Am? ( i mean, Em on a DG seems obvious, Am, less so... but perhaps that's the best tuning for the rest of the band? wouldnt something with flats not have been more logical, th l those bagpipes D ad G pipes, and saxophones?)

Damn - I have to have another go in the upper octave now...... :||: (and try to play a little slower... :Ph )

Looks like Flatworld should be TOTM. I'm certainly going to have a twiddle with it again  ::).......hmmm Am and Bm...now that's interesting   8)

Learner/improver's crib:  I learned this tune off the Vanilla CD - I hear tunes as tunes and I frankly wasn't aware of its key! (I was on a C/F at the time). If you 'play in natural minor' for your box it doesn't matter.  The chord run below is for D/G.

I set about Flatworld sort of naturally, and 'as per own rules' worked out its basses first.  Much of its beauty  comes from that flowing cadence.  I hear it 'as below' but you can experiment with substitutions once learned - add a little judicious tension here and there  :P

Its notes are from the G diatonic scale, specifically 6th mode = 'aolian' Em and so 'mostly' on the pull. Importantly it isn't the Em based on your D row - there's no C# in there. Also means you've got to be delicate with the A chord ...

I take my 3rds out A C#D.  If  Amaj is hard wired, try Abass or A+Cbass
I find A+Cchordover  heavy, but you might like it  ;)

|:Em   | C    | A    | B    | Em   | C    | D    | B  |
| Em   | C    | A    | B | Em   | C    | D    | Em:|
--
|:Em   | C    | D    | G | Em   | C    | D    | B   |
| Em   | C    | D    | G | Em   | C    | B   | Em:|

I'd recommend anyone wanting to learn just get their riff really solid first.  I find it works better to play C on the pull and D on the push. A good way to practice is to play Almo's video and 'accompany' left end only. Yes, other chords work too (especially D-B swaps), but I had to put in something, and the above feels natural to me.

Then and only then, fit in RH melody using higher octave*. They are 95% same way as chord and rocking bellows handles the others if you are on the right row (experiment)! It is a bit squeaky on D/G unless you have L+M voicing, but a perfect exercise for 1. playing top end and 2. across rows. I learned both from this tune, and am eternally grateful to Andy for one of the best melodeon tunes, ever! It is a standard teaching tune in France.

*Flatworld works lower octave if you have a low C - another damn good reason to reconfigure the British D/G.

This is exactly how I learnt it, bass up.  I have only recently switched to a D/G (from a B/C) and Flatworld was only the 4th or 5th tune that I have learnt since switching.  It took some hard practice but it sounds great now and well worth putting in the hours.

I finally got around to learning and recording Flatworld - one of those tunes that I always meant to get around to....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrftU9LoR3A

Almo
I've carefully read everything that was written down here (though I'm afraid I've not understood every thing perfectly : french melodeons are not built as brittish ones, my musical knowledge being somewhat a bit unsufficient, and my english too ;-).

Hereabove à link on YT (I played it long ago, sorry ... Maybe I would be somewhat better now ?) :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9lLMv3zuwg

In order I get better,  could anybody tell me a few things :

what is the original tonality of that tune ? Andy Cutting says Am and my sheet seems Am too, but with an accidental C sharp in the second part (that I don't play on the YT video).

But I wonder about that C sharp : if it's Am, shouldn't it be a G sharp instead of a C ? or nothing at all if it's an ancient Am tonality ?

thks !

I've never seen sheet music for this tune but I have listened to Andy Cutting's playing of it many times. Yes, there is a C# accidental in the second part, giving a brief hint of the major key feel - I'm not sure if it qualifies as an example of a tierce de Picardie, a device much used in early and Renaissance music, since that usually occurs at the very end of a tune. But it's the same sort of idea. I don't think you want to go putting any G#s in this tune.
