Sharpsichord!
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:54:42 PM »

I just wanted to bring people's attention to this fantastic instrument/piece of engineering by Henry Dagg. This video is with Chris Wood and the whole thing has such a beautiful eerie quality. A good friend of mine is soon to be responsible for getting this instrument of the workshop and on tour, not an easy task!!

cheers,
Tim

I'm delighted and speechless!   I feel the world is a better place now I know that people can make such things.

Theo,
I feel exactly the same. OK this isn't an every day instrument that will find its way into/influence modern music in any significant way, but the fact that there are people out there still creating new instruments using some of the older principles heartens me greatly. I feel that a lot of effort is currently being invested on developing the midi/digital side of things which is as it should be, but the Sharpsichord fills me with wonder, curiosity and inspiration.
Hooray for Henry Dagg (his appearance on this years Jools Holland Hootenanny is well worth a visit to youtube too.)

I believe EFDSS commissioned it, but I could be wrong. It's rather fantastic, as are the rest of his musical inventions. A true eccentric.

Yes, there is a "making of" video here:

What an incredible machine...and fabricated in stainless steel no less.  Clearly a labor of love as all the best things are.  I was immediately struck by how cumbersome it must be to change all those pins on the drum being through-bolted from the inside.  Surely there is a way to make pins that insert from the outside.  It must take hours and hours to change the piece of music that it plays.

Terrific music. They need to contact Terry Gilliam or Steve Stapleton, pronto!
