Searching for threads
« on: May 08, 2011, 09:13:53 PM »

As a recent recruit, I'm trying to catch up so far as practicable with some of what has already been said, and having been having a look through the rather large body of postings for promising topics.

I may well be wrong, but I seem to be able to search only for words in the body of each posting rather than words in the header of a thread.

For example - searching from Forum Home for the word 'faking' yields a dozen or so instances in  bodies  of  posts. For the post which is part of the thread Faking it, faking is twice highlighted in the post itself, but not in the heading. Of several posts in the Faking It thread, only one showed on a search for Faking.

The other way of doing it is to screen through very many pages of threads under each general heading, which does rather test my eyesight and concentration.

Please, what have I missed in finding out what threads already exist?

You are correct that a vanilla search does not seem to search the topic titles, but all is not lst. There is a check box - Search in topic subject only - which forces the searching of titles.

Basically the search function is pretty useless. Might be a better bet to use a site search through google.

Thank you both. Very quick and helpful.

Right - the magnifying glass icon next the search box opens a new set of search parameters, ignoring what has just been typed in, and can indeed search headers.

I'd unwittingly invoked the search via Google technique earlier today - trying to answer a question on melodeon history...

Google certainly indexes all the pellets pearls of wisdom we post here - I found the site when a post with my name in appeared.

Given the relative weakness of the parochial SMF search engine, might it be possible to add a google site search to the toolbar?

I'll leave that one for Clive to answer.
