Live French music - where do you start?
« on: May 14, 2011, 11:19:22 AM »

Dear All,
I will be holidaying in the Ardeche in July, just on/slightly over the Massif Central boundary and there might be opportunities to listen to some local players. Previous French holidays have never included 'local culture' simply through my lack of interest, but life has changed for me over the last year and now include melodeons. It might be worth me taking time off from the swimming pool and getting cultured!
I've seen tune books dedicated to this region, and so was wondering what was the probability of seeing stuff live.
Are there equivalents of our pub sessions?
Does it rely on asking local people/knowledge when there, or are there festival/music sites like ours to point you in the right direction?
I apologies for the utter ignorance shown, but I simply have no idea!
cheers

Four of the best festivals - St Chartier - Embraud/la Chananée - Fete des Vulcans (Auvergne) - and Grand Bal de Europe - are in July. all are recommended and I even got a room in the local inn last time I went to Embraud, and fairly close to the Vulcans.

Feel free to pm me if the website don't give enough info  Chris

The beauty of Europe is that you travel 30 miles out of the French port of Calais .. the language changes (dutch), the architecture changes (big windows), the culture changes  8)

Downside is that we have to endure the 'Song for Europe' once a year. I understand from World Service this morning that the French were amongst the 6 (of 43) who sang in their own language. Given that Britain and Ireland use English anyway - maybe this European culture diversity won't last forever.

It never ceases to amaze me how different it immediately is when I get off the Roscoff Ferry ( I'm 40mins from Plymouth ) ......I know I'm in another country. Yes Brittany is only a hop across and continualy likened to Cornwall....but for me that's where it ends. This year we'll do a Calais crossing. I'll look out for other differences, will take note.
Hadn't thought about the fact that it won't be Brittany! Duhhhh

Having hopped around the sites mentioned ( thanks Chris for being the local attache for things French ) it looks like I'll either miss them or be a massive drive away.
I'll revert to relying on local knowledge and ask around the area on arrival. Though I've never been aware of anything 'folkie' when holidaying, my friend regularly goes to the lower Dordogne and stays about a mile from a Bastide town and regularly reports of local events happening either in the town or at his capsite, so will keep my eyes open.

Sorry Gary, will a postcard help or increase the agony?  ;)

Shame - just a few days timing can make so much  of difference! There are numerous smaller festivals and most go into Trad magazine's Festivals de l' été  - http://www.tradmagazine.com/pdfs/festi2011.pdf  - happy hunting!

Don't miss the Pont d'Arc - yup - it's a real river running under a real bridge of rock!

I expect we'll have a trip through it....... after really enjoying canoe trips down the Dordogne!
Thanks for the tradmag, have downloaded it and will investigate.
We booked it last autumn and have school hols to consider, so timing has to be fitted in with that.
Hey ho....
Again, thanks for the info

We booked it last autumn and have school hols to consider, so timing has to be fitted in with that.

Been there too - we used to take the kids out of school to make St Chartier around 14 July.  I'll offer this nice anecdote.

Music teacher: "I want you to all name an instrument"

  Susan: "guitar, Miss"
  Eleanor: "trumpet, Miss"
  Leanne: "saxophone, Miss"
  Dolly: "hurdy-gurdy, Miss"   :o

.. at which point "Miss" nearly falls off stool! She'd thought herself the only gurdy player for 50 miles - then finds a 7 year old pupil has heard hundreds of them! But there's always an end of term concert. AFAIK Miss still misses the festival.  :|glug

Working in a school means I'm stuffed and both girls have various important exams, so not an option this year, but hopefully one year!
Isn't it great when kids pop the teacher's bubble of self importance!

Not much help on the music front I'm afraid, but you really should go to Guines, near Calais, even if it is only for a night before the ferry. They celebrate the fact that they were once an English territory. Henry VII is revered more or less as a god and there are statues of him there. Interestingly enough they have vinegar on their frites. I didn't expect that.

Thanks for the tip.  Think I've said before but bears repeating:  The Paris brothers sprinkled vin aigre on their Birkenhead chips in the spirit of good International relations and entente. We'd all picked at calf head and chips at Embraud so this was very much ' fair play).  Fredu took a small portion of  mushy peas  ??? like a man - Manu indicated that he had to draw the line somewhere   :-X

KP: Hmmm... that's a decidedly unusual take on the Breton crepes I 've previously wolfed down.
Will keep it in mind, though a ferry doth wait for no man....or summat!
