Yes, I am wanting to understand what you mean by 'counting in twos'.

The short answer to that is very simple, when listening to a piece of music I tap my foot and count according to the pulse I 'feel' in the music. My counter question is to ask why you think that hornpipes are counted in twos? No trick questions are intended here, this is genuine curiosity and self doubt about my understanding of the term. I'm currently scanning my (vast!) collection of hornpipes in both simple and compound time in order to establish the most commonly annotated time signature for a hornpipe. My collection is hardly definitive though.  ::)

Well that is what I thought you meant in which case I would say that a hornpipe is 'counted in twos' but then so is a jig or a reel.  So it seems to me that counting the pulses per measure isn't very helpful in distinguishing the tune type.

I learned it a darn long time ago, maybe 15 or more years ago, I think from a Scottish fiddler's session tune book called Horo-Gheallaidh. It had a black and white cover, if I remember correctly.

However, it doesn't seem to be in a book with the same title I bought a few months ago, so I'm now filled with doubts about where I got it!

Wherever it's from, I think it deserves to be brought back and to be played more widely.

It was a big favourite with Florida for a long time, and we played it as part of a set that also included a three-instrument close harmony version of Chief O'Neill's.

Gav

I have a copy of Ho-Ro-ghaellaidh published in 1990 and The Flying Coach isn't in it, so I think you've misremembered either the name of the tune (which seems unlikely) or the book it came from.

I thought jigs were 6/8 time counted in three's ? this topic may need a new thread.
I was told that all music is counted in either two's or three's or combination of both.
I'm really not that good at counting it out while thinking about it but sometimes I'll tap along with out thinking about it.
I just try to make it sound like what I'm hearing others play. (not always reliable though as my sailors hornpipe proved )

Given the ThOTM, I thought it was time I had a serious go at Stoney Steps on my 4th button start Hohner Pressed Wood. Here it is - the tricky blighter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quTcQwgnkjs

I'm very impressed with this and after watching the video for the umpteenth time I'm convinced your pressed wood box has the same layout as my Liliput. Stoney Steps remains very much a work in progress for me but your performance has rekindled my interest in the tune so I'll bring it out and dust it off again. It may just have to go back in the pending box with other things like the Presbyterian that I'm just not good enough to play on melodeon yet though. Thanks for the three delightfully entertaining contributions you've made this month.

Thanks so much Pete. Thanks also to Anahata who helped bring Stoney Steps to the attention of the world (of melodeons anyway!) Also to Sandy who, as I often find, plays tunes at a speed and with a clarity that makes it possible use her vids as training aids.

Tallship, Martin:

A bit of Googling suggests that The Flying Coach may have come from the Leadley manuscript, from which I also found a favourite untitled hornpipe... http://youtu.be/eZIMaQ8kPns

Nice healthy theme this month with lots of great music; moving on to the next theme now, but as ever late entries are very much encouraged - just stick them on the end here!

Yup Tallship, that looks like it. Hey, you're no too far from us - you coming to Frittenden, maybe to play in the band on Saturday night or the session at lunchtime?

A late contribution.  The Wicklow Hornpipe.  I would have got it in sooner but the air button on the instrument broke and I had to put in a makeshift repair.

A fairly lumpen hornpipe, the name of which I cannot remember - but if I can play it on the melodeon, it means it's pretty simple and most likely well known.

Can anyone help with the name?

http://youtu.be/C9S1enQPL_Q

And I'll throw in a quick Steamboat Hornpipe for good measure

Thanks.

Super playing, simplicity is a virtue for so many of these tunes.

not an easy job those hornpipes ... and on the second one we are a bit too fast (but at the end, it was deliberate  8) !

Been playing the melodeon for about a year now. Decided it was time to record another video so ended up picking my favorite hornpipe of right now called "Queen of the West" (Also have seen it as "The Toss Pot" but QotW sounds a bit nicer)
