After following the website for about three months, in an effort to teach myself how to play the melodeon (after teaching myself the P/A for about 8 months), I have finally put up a TOTM. This is the first song that I can really play on the box... my goal was to put both hands together and make as little mistakes as possible.

So, 1,323,593 tries later, here is my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awacM4Gy7nc

Ladies and gentlemen, your comments are the only ones that I have, please take a look and help me out!!

thanks,
mr "looking forward to many more" dibbs

salut!

That was well done, !

For Boblstrum and Carla, I am pleased with the warm humor you have for each other.
...And, another Charles Ives-ish style hidden in there. Having fun and enjoying one's
self will give you a passing grade on any exam.

Must be nice to have the luxury of dissatisfaction with playing as controlled and precise as yours. When I follow along "tapping" your speed into my little iPod metronome app, I can't see more than a 1 beat per second variation around 85 bps from start to finish. I'd certainly settle for 1.2% wobble in anything that I do!!

It's a really solid and enjoyable contribution to the TOTM...thanks!

I really enjoyed that. Nice to hear an English tune, that I've always played in a punchy way, played in a more relaxed European way. It'd make a great schottische. Thanks for that.  (:)

thanks a lot, yes it could be a scottish for me, you are right : I'm accustomed to that step, and my fingers automatically adopt this rythm ... :|||:

Lemmy Brazil's 2 is a hornpipe, isn't it, and I don't really know the way it is danced ? or wether it is danced at all ?

Many thanks, tjsmithdog5 !

What I meant is that I was not totally statisfied with the way I played part 2 (my musical vacabulary in english being what it is, I'll try to explain the best I can) :

the strong beat for the right hand should be played together with the bass on the left hand, shouldn't it, and distinctly stressed and marked compared to the weak beat. But when I listened to my recording, I noticed it was not completely OK according to that, in part 2. That's it.

Yes indeed, as I understand it tunes like this are from a stepdancing tradition which still continues in East Anglia and Dartmoor. I am sure other members can give more detail but this link shows an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HjRUA4qFcQ

An excellent example of the "fast hornpipe" stepping style that is very common.
I've played for Percy West myself, though, and he can step to all sorts of rhythms and speeds (polkas are getting popular currently), and Tommy Orchard, a step dancer from Devon, once got up and started stepping when we were playing jigs, to my complete surprise!

Lemmy's can also be played slower with dotted rhythm (my own contribution was more like that) and used as a hornpipe for step-hop social dances like Nottingham Swing or Clopton Bridge, and it's true that it would make good Scottish too, played in the right speed and style.

Here, for the record, is my contribution for the month. Another dotted version. Like most of the TOTMs we've had so far, I'd never heard the tune before, so becoming familiar with it was an enjoyable experience. Thanks to all the contributors for giving some targets for my efforts.

Nice playing and a gorgeous sounding box. I listened to your your version of Cheshire Waltz too; you and I seem to have the same nice old-fashioned taste in chords!

That's lovely. Particularly like the bass pattern at the start of the B music. I'll have to try to work that into my version - still a work in progress!

Thanks, I understand "dotted rythm". My first attempt was "regular" as far as rhythm is concerned : that is the reason why it sounds scottish-like, isn't it ?
I feel like trying another attempt the other way. maybe tomorrow ..

Well, the end of the month is nigh upon us, and I made a solemn vow to myself that I would post my first TOTM entry this time around.

So here goes: http://www.onmvoice.com/play.php?a=58812. I've been working quite hard at this, but I think I could have used another month (and more) as its still all obviously pretty rough.

I've been trying to learn the melodeon since January this year when I bought this Sandpiper D/G melodeon from the Music Room. This is the one with tipo a mano reeds. Another toy I bought recently was a Zoom H4n portable recorder that I used to make this recording - and I just couldn't resist trying out the mulitracking on this recording...

Sounds good to me - well done on your playing and indeed just getting a recording up! It's very easy to fall into the trap of 'I'll record this when it's perfect', and of course it never gets done. Your recording is very good as it is, and I'm glad I got the chance to hear it. Love the multi-tracked bit at the end too!  :D

Cheers,

Clive
