Poll: Tune of the Month for October 2011
« on: September 26, 2011, 12:49:33 AM »

Hi Folks - here we are again! Pick your favourite victim from this lot:

Portobello - as played here by Ed Rennie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Obnox0pug On the notes of his video, Ed says:

Quote
Jolly hornpipe which i learned from The Iron Men, back many a long year. Which Portobello, I know not. Probalby not the flea market one in that London, where I have spent a jolly day or two, ate my fill at "The Favourite Cafe" and then a jar in "The Frog and Firkin. Wonder if that cafe is still there, good scoff and very very cheap.

The Sloe - another cracking session tune.  Courtesy of Luca's youtube channel and blog, here's a quick tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTPqzaWQRno ... and here's Spiers & Boden's version at ramming speed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoMXHhnt5xw (it's the 3rd tune in their Sloe Gin set, starts at 1:41)

An Dro - this month's slightly off the wall suggestion, an An Dro is a circle/spiral/etc dance from Brittany. There's *lots* of tunes out there simply known as 'An Dro' because hardly any of them have names. Anyway, hunting for the An Dro I really wanted, I came across this little ditty, which wins a nomination on the basis of having a good clean video showing it! (Oh, and it's a cracking tune, and sounds like it fits on a melodeon perfectly):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kmy8Jl-7aZA

If anyone knows if this tune actually has a real name, please let me know!

And last months runner up, we have Air For Maurice Ogg:

Quote
a lovely slow air written by Alistair Anderson, the midi playback makes it sound pretty wooden but in reality it flows beautifully. I've never heard it played on pipes and it certainly wasn't written with pipes in mind but I can hear drones going in my head and I'd love to hear what people come up with. So here is the strangely titled Air For Maurice Ogg.

No melodeon videos of this one (yet!), but here's a rather nice guitar version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18j6ut1Af_A

That An Dro, by the way, is played in A minor on the outside row of a G/C box in the video. It fits fine on the inside row of a D/G and can be played on one row. To fit basses to it on a D/G we'd probably have to transpose it to E minor I expect.

I've voted for Portobello because I don't know it already and it does sound a jolly tune. As you say Clive there seem to be lots of An Dro's so perhaps it could be a theme of the month rather than having one as TOTM?

I've voted for the Sloe 'cos I don't know it already and it does sound like a jolly good tune.

I've always assumed it was the one in Edinburgh.....though I don't know why.

The Sloe is only one a recognize and I struggle to play it right. I always mess up the bases.

I'd like an An Dro, but if this tune isn't identified we probably also don't know much about composer or copyright issues.

In the interests of historical accuracy, and as one of the Ironmen from whom the esteemed Mr Rennie learned Portobello, we pinched it from the seminal Hemlock Cock and Bull Band's (as they were then) 1980 album All Buttoned Up. Well worth a listen if you can track it down.

Thank you - let me know what you find out! If all else fails, we could probably track it down via Mr Perroches I expect.

I'll be seeing him at the Pentreffest weekend in October if we haven't got an answer by then, and still want to know...

Cheers,

Yann-Fañch Perroches says:

It’s an adaptation I did of a song by the band « les ours du Scorff », but this song comes from a traditional tune…

Corinne and Denis playing on the video

Not sure of the original name… I call it « Inna inna ! »

East Brittany dialect (Gallo) for : "There is some, there is some !"

The Portobello Hornpipe is from the William Irwin collection -  http://www.village-music-project.org.uk/abc/IRWIN.ABC
and as Baz says was popularised by Cock & Bull. In my experience, most people play the low notes an octave up as -

Thus perpetuating the myth that not many tunes use those low notes ;)

Let's at least have the Portobellow Hornpipe as written so individual players can decide if they want to hack it about and change octave!

Sadly the Air for Maurice Ogg will probably sink without trace now, but in the face of such strong contenders that's hardly surprising!
