http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-QhrULCJig  Sorry you can only see the bass end of the melodeon, but it was quite cramped in the pub and this was the only angle my wife could sensibly video us from.

Lovely fiddle and a crisp left end on melodeon.  Not to detract from your playing of the tune in any way but this is one of the best examples I've come across of just how directional the sound coming out of a melodeon is!

Thanks, Chris. Yes, the shielded Tommy treble with its dry MM tuning is a bit lost, but at least third time through the LMM is a bit more "in there". Still, it was a purely opportunist recording, and at least now I know how to get videos onto YouTube, and lesson learned (for all) about directionality.

My first YouTube video and first post to ThOTM.

My friend Nick on fiddle and myself on Castagnari Tommy (original reeds, dry tuning), playing Princess Royal:

Very nice - now you've got YouTube sussed, we can look forward to hearing and seeing a lot more of your playing.  (:)

Alan: I loved your playing of The Last Voyage of the Barque Endeavour - very ethereal and poignant - and the photographs at Whitby suited the tune perfectly. However, had you (or anyone else) noticed the similarity to the tune/song Benjamin Bowmaneer?

Hi Bob,
I just replied to this on another post...it does sound a little similar in places - I hadn't heard Benjamin Bowmaneer for ages and then it was sung faster and with gusto in accapella style.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Here's a recording taken from a concert Mark Prescott and I (as Vivant) did at our local parish church a week or two back; 2 schottisches:

Derriere Les Carreaux and Knife Edge - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5_-ZfY38gs

Derriere Les Carreaux was written by Frederic Paris; The Knife Edge is, if I remember correctly, a reworking of the Knife Edge Polka, which I thought was derived from the Bourree a Malochet, but a few quick youtube searches soon put an end to that theory.

Mark is a rather splendid fiddle player, and plays, well fiddle. What type/maker, I've really no idea - all violins look the same to me!  >:E I'm playing the Hohner Club in C/F, and these tunes come out in D minor.

Recorded live, no reverb or post processing - the church *is* the reverb. I've also stuck this up as a 'teaser' track for the upcoming Vivant difficult second CD on our Bandcamp site - we were considering using these tunes, but frankly, they're too quick and upbeat to fit in with the rest of the stuff we have planned for the CD, so here you go - grab the free download from here in mp3/ogg/whatever, from the wonderful Bandcamp service:

http://vivant-uk.bandcamp.com/track/free-track-derriere-les-carreaux-knife-edge

You have to give an email address for Bandcamp downloads I'm afraid, but that means I can send you an email every time we release a CD. So that'll be about one email per 10 years then.

Enjoy,

Clive

Enjoyed! So glad u put this up. Wanted to be in the pews but in end could not face mobike journey up & back.
For next year if it's on again in April you might consider linking up with violins for peace across the water. you would be a big hit and you would more than likely get fed and wined not just watered...... 31 venues including churches and basilicas some with great acoustics.

http://www.violonsdelapaix.fr/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/programmeviolonsdelapaix2010.pdf

Similarly this summer should see concerts in lots of little village churches in the evenings as part of the ancient  midsummer nights/ dreams -- playing singing and dancing and  in the Sept Vallees -- down the Boulogne coast to the river Canche.
Have to find details...

tks again. (:)

Having no spare time for new recordings at the moment, I am posting an old recording that I made after obtaining my Boss Micro BR digital recorder a couple of years ago. Please note that I had intended to have a melodeon track, but my Hohner was slightly flat at the time, so the project proceeded with mandolin, cittern, guitar and Anglo concertina. The tune is 'Bundle & Go', learned from a Sharon Shannon album years back. It was a milestone for me personally because I was in awe of the tune, Sharon's fluidity and prowess on the box, and the background strings played by Donal Lunny. So being a part time string player, I had to learn the whole kaboodle. Here's the result:

Time to move on to a new theme folks; late entries as always are welcome - just keep them posting them here!

Cheers,

Clive

A covert recording that was passed to me several weeks ago. Morris rehearsal last winter when I was just learning some of the tunes, the concertina bites in nicely when I am playing a bit I know! I think we've played this out once this season so I've forgotten it of course.  ::)

Very late one from me. Starry Night in Shetland played on a Pokerwork D/G with friend on fiddle: http://flic.kr/p/7VhgQe

I'd been playing for about six months when was recorded.

Great playing, but you guys seriously dance it at that speed?!  :o Quite impressive, I have to say.

Yes, that's the normal dancing speed for Woodchurch. When I first started with them I tried to follow the playing using the usual sources for morris music but in the end had to create a unique tune book as there are so many differences in what we play and dance. We even have the slows in the Valentine in a different place to everyone else apart from Hartley morris with whom we are closely associated. I'll see if I can find a sound file for that and send you a link.

Many of the Woodchurch dances are much faster than I generally see on youtube etc, the Upton Stick Dance is just manic although I'm told Hartley do it faster still! They do a stick dance which they call 'Old Twanger' to the tune of Curly Headed Ploughboy that I struggle to keep up with in the B part, and the ending of Jockey to the Fair is just ridiculously fast.

The foreman of Woodchurch is very aware (via youtube) of a couple of talented young men in the Cambridge area who would always be made most welcome should they find themselves in the area.  ;)

That's a creditable performance then Bryn, far better than I was at six months - you're using both hands for a start!

Here is a band recorded at Folkworks Summer School,  There are 8 of us in all,  don't have all the names to hand, but the box players are myself and a certain Mr Cutting.
