BBC Virtual Session - Great for practicing along with.
« on: June 06, 2011, 11:05:22 AM »

Virtual Session

An interesting web page for players of all abilities, some nice tunes on there - and you can just repeat and repeat and repeat until you have got them nailled.

If you're not sure of how reels, hornpipes, jigs should sound - it's all there.

Alan - brilliant .. thanks for posting the link. I'd been introduced to the BBC virtual sessions about a year ago but then had a computer mishap and had to rebuild from the factory restore,  so of course I lost all my links and could'nt remember where the virtual sessions had come from!  (:)

Wow! Wonderful! I'm not playing well enough or fast enough for my regular session yet and this is just what I need to practice with. Thanks Almo.  :D

It's a pity there isn't a double CD of English session tunes play slowly.....

There are four - David Oliver's Session Collections, should be available from the Sage.  Try phoning 0191 443 4582 and asking for Kat Davidson, or Tom Bestford.

BBC Virtual session is useful as an introduction to Irish music but pretty useless for English sessions. What IS useful (apart from listening to your favourite CD's and playing along with them) is to carry a digi recorder with you when you go to sessions. Just switch it on and let it run. Invaluable! When you get home, you've got all your local session tunes at your command to play along with. Virtual Session was a great idea, shame the BBC didn't think to do more with it.

I would echo the comment about carrying a mini recorder. They can be picked up cheaply and mean you never miss out on learning "that tune" that you played all weekend but forgot in the car going home!
