Hi Dave,
Just returned to Edinburgh after a very enjoyable few days at a button box course with Graeme and Jim Mackay in Kingussie. Most of the usual Skye crew in attendance. Bill Young and I talked at length about the FR18 as I am thinking about buying one after reading all about it on the forum and trying Grahams out on Skye. I stay in a tenament and the Roland would allow me to play after 9pm
I think the box will be a success and I will keep you and the other users up to date regarding the purchase. Keep all the details coming and Bill and I will pick your brains about the B C C# configuration at a later date.
All the best,
                Dick.

Dick, this is good news - I think you will enjoy.  Using the headphones you can practice all night if you wish and disturb no-one. The sound heard on the phones is quite different than through an amplifier, but you still get to grips with the everything and have fun too.

I have sent Bill the bass layouts I have been using for bcc#. If anyone else wants to see them, for trial or comment, send me a PM. best wishes DaveW

Me too Dick so don't forget to share  ;D

When you've discovered that sound that touches your soul you'll have hours of fun

....trying to remember the sequence and button(s) you pressed to get it :P

Have you picked an amp yet?  There are three that I've tried and they all do the job; the lightest is the Roland Mobile cube, then the Microcube that you saw on An t-Eilean Sgianach, the heaviest is the taxi ... all are mains / battery.

Hi Graham,
I have a couple of small guitar amps that I will use/try when the box arrives.
I have read that a keyboard amp will give the clearest sound. The wee amp you had on Skye was nice and clear. So something like that will probably do me fine.
Going for a tune tonight and the piano key player has the Roland equivelent in key form of our FR18 so when mine arrives we intend to have a Roland evening which will be fun and musical with a lot of luck!
Cheers,
          Dick

Hi

I have got what is probably a rather dumb question but would appreciate a bit of advice.

I have just started to learn to play the melodeon (acoustic) and am trying to get to grips with bellow direction changes etc. when plying certain notes.

However when I view some of the videos (from the links above) of people playing the FR18 they don’t seem to be changing bellows direction to play different notes.
Is this because they are playing across the rows or are they making these direction changes quickly and subtly? Or am I just missing the direction change.

Presumably the method of playing the FR18 should be the same as an acoustic melodeon?

I have a piano V Accordion and am interested in the apparent similar versatility of the FR18.

Thanks

Steve

You have no idea of what keyboard configuration any of the FR18 players are using, therefore it impossible to tell what fingering system they are using.  If you set it up as a standard ADG for instance then it plays just like an acoustic ADG,  likewise you can easily change it to a BCC# system, or any other layout you prefer - this makes it a very versatile instrument which could be played in any style or system  -  i'm waffling now, but you get the gist of it

Hi All,
Just finished a few hours with the new FR18 which I picked up from GG Digital Glasgow on Wednesday. Can only play in  BC  but what great sounds and fun. Setting the box up with Bill next week so will let you all know how it goes. I used my old Pevey Backstage amp from my guitar playing days. Mono but a good sound, so far as well as the accordion I like the Violin and the horn sounds but don't ask me how I got them! :|||: More details to follow.
Regards,
           Dick.
ps thanks to Dave, Graham and Bill for all their advice during the purchase.

"Goood - now boys and girls - Hands up if you've got one  ;D

Yees - That's all right Graham and Mr Summerstars we know about you and you too Dave, with Dick that makes four

ps I've just been through the posts on this thread - we also have Huw, Howard Mitchell, MadDogMurdoch (I hope his bark is worse than his bite), Mitchik and Ray Langton. A unofficial list, but that adds up to nine. Who is going to organise the 2012 consortium?

best wishes  DaveW
